Installing Forum software

I am trying to install useBB forum software on my server hosted by 1and1. My package is on a Linux server and includes MySQL database and script support for Perl, Python, and PHP 3, 4, and 5.

I am trying to do an Automatic installation per the instructions below:

*****
The automatic installer is mostly the best and easiest method to install UseBB.

Rename config.php-dist to config.php;
Upload/move all the files to their final destination online;
Optional but recommended: chmod config.php so that it is writable by the webserver (try chmod 0777);
Open the installation wizard in your web browser (located at install/).
*****

After doing all of the above, when I try to open the wizard in my browser (IE7) all I get is the script?

Am I missing something, do I have to have something else installed on the server? I am a novice at this type of thing so I would be grateful for any help.

thanks,
rb56

Update,
I received this from 1and1 support. along with an email stating that they do not meet the requirements to run this software?

*****
> Minimum requirements
> HTTP server supporting PHP
> PHP version 4.1.0, including session, PCRE and mysql extensions
> MySQL version 3.23
> Recommended set-up
> It is highly recommended to use UseBB on the following set-ups.
>
> GNU/Linux operating system
> Recent Apache HTTPD version, including mod_rewrite
> Recent PHP version, including session, PCRE, mysql(i) and curl
extensions
> Recent MySQL version
> Important: If you use MySQL 4.1 or higher, it is highly recommended to
use a latin1 collation instead of a Unicode one. Should your host use
Unicode as default database collation, please change this for your
database using phpMyAdmin or a similar administration tool or contact
your host before installing UseBB. In most cases though, no action will
be necessary.

Again I am a novice, can anyone tell me what requirement they don't meet? It doesn't seem like this software should be a big deal to run.

thanks,

when you browse to the installation script on your site, is it a .php?
when 'all you get is a script', you're saying that you see php code in the browser?
(like <?php)
?

i didn't look into the requirements or 1and1s phpinfo page..but chances are they're compatible. 1and1 is likely brushing you off.
you don't get much support for 10 bucks a year...

thanks for the reply,

Yes, it is a .php .../usebb-1.0.5/UseBB/install/index.php

Yes, sorry for the wrong terminology it is showing the code, <?php is on the first line.

I have sent another email to 1and1 support but haven't heard back. I can't beleive that this software can be that hard to run.

Anymore ideas as to what I need to do?

thanks,

if a .php file is outputing the code instead of parsing it, something is very wrong with their server (or at least the configuration of your account on their server)

I contacted them and this is the reply that I got.

Thank you for contacting us.

Your account should be setup to execute .php files with PHP by default.
I see a usebb folder in your webspace, however currently you do not have
any domains pointing to a place where you'd be able to access the usebb
folder from. At the moment all of your domains are pointing to other
sub-folders, as such there is no real way to access your usebb folder.
You will likely want to point one of your domains to this folder so that
you may access it, or create a sub-domain for this purpose. Once done
you should be able to properly access these files.
*****
So now I have created a sub domain under the domain name of the site that I want to use the forum on where the destination folder is usebb-1.0.5.

I tried http://subdomain.domain/usebb-1.0.5/UseBB/install/index.php (where subdomain.domain is the actual name) but I get a 404 error. Am I not using the right path?

thanks

wow what a mess!

for starters....
when you were trying to run that install script (the one that outputted php code), you were hitting it from a browser right? and the url was something like http://www.yourdomain.com/usebb/install/index.php....right?
if you answered yes to both of those questions, then 1and1 support is seriously pathetic.

now, ignoring the above - i'd like some additional details.
when you FTP into your webspace, do you see a www or a public_html directory? If so, is your usebb directories uploaded to one of those directories? (this is a definate 'yes' question if you've successfully browsed to it with IE, but i just want to make sure.

Feel free to PM me with domain info, i'd be more than happy to help you look into this.
