Normally I would reformat and start clean. no problem . But this win 98se system has proprietary business software and printer drivers and is shared with other office users who rely on it. The upgarde I did last from a win 98 only used the fat 32. If I do it that way, preserving in tact all the programs, can I later format to NTFS without losing the data and programs? Is there software that will do that? If not, what do you recommend?

Windows XP will do all you need. Simply do an upgrade install of Windows XP overtop of the Win98 system using the existing Fat32 FS. This will preserve your data and programs.

After the WinXP is up and running, you can go into Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Disk Management and convert to NTFS.

Two cautions:

1) Upgrade installs of WinXP are often not as stable as clean installs, so you may have stability issues with the new system.

2) BACKUP your data before you start. The best made plans of men and mice ....

I tried that on my last upgrade install and I couldn't find how to convert the drive from fat32 to ntfs. Can you elaborate little more.? I am familier with disk management, but I didn't find how to convert. I didn't see an option by right clicking on the drive.

Open a cmd window and type 'help convert' for documentation on the convert utility. Basically you need to do:

convert c: /FS:NTFS
