Installing new hard drive - extremely slow file copying

Is the new drive defective? or it's normal. I'd think it should be a breeze to copy 40-50GB from the old drive to the new one.

Not in my experience.

One would think it would be fast, but it's not.

Is it doing defragmentation at the same time? maybe that's why.

It was slow for me.
Last time I did it, it took 1.5 hours for 6 gb.

How are the drives setup? is one the master and the other a slave to it on the same ide channel?

if so then you can only read OR write at a time.. which will slow things down heaps...

Also make sure both are set Ultra DMA mode (and not PIO).

Put the drives on separate IDE channels - speeds up tremendously!!! Cross-channel transfers are optimum as C_H said, only one drive on a channel can operate at a time. Or you could set up the largest drive cache as possible - that would speed things up some, but not as much as going separate channels.
