Quick summary, hopefully quick answer.... (I did a forum search but couldn't find an answer, and figured the mobo folks could give input and setup ideas).
My last few system builds (all nVidia chipset based) I slipstreamed the Raid drivers into an XP SP2 install, and gave installing the OS onto a RAID 5 setup a shot.
On all the systems, I saw some really ****** results, from my soundcard giving me all sorts of hiss/pop, to my video capture card acting funky, video performance problems, my old IDE Hard Drives performing faster than my RAID5 array, etc. Every time when I looked into it it was more or less attributed to "don't do that" when it comes to the OS in a raid5 setup with the onboard controller. I'm not exactly starving for disks, but I hate "wasting" a bunch of my drives across a 0+1 setup.
Now that I'm looking to upgrade to a Core2Duo....
Hopefully someone has attempted to install the OS onto a Raid5 setup on an ICH9 mobo and can give me some idea of if it's worth it.
If you've had success, I'd be even more appreciative if you could point me towards the board you used.
Conversely, if anyone has a C2D board with a 4x PCI-e for me to add a dedicated SAS card (or someone running such a setup right now) some idea on that setup would be appreciated.
