installing win 2000 ?

I want to install win 2000 on to a primary partition on a slave hard drive - (E).

can i install win 2000 from a win 2000 cd by booting from the win 2000 cd while I have xp installed on my master drive. Will it allow me to install 2000 to my slave hard drive or will it try to overwrite xp?

Or would it be preferable to rip out the master and then make the slave the master 1st, then install win 2000?

I would never risk installing to a slave drive with the master still installed.
You dont have to do anything with the slave drive just shut the machine down disconnect the master drive and boot from the CD.

2000 should install to the slave ok and add the option to boot it on your boot.ini file. The actual 'boot' files (ntldr etc) will be located on the 'master' whilst you'll be able to place the windows directory on 'E'.
Problem here is that if you then unplug the master, the slave won't be bootable

Most modern PC's are configured for master/slave according to the cable rather by jumpers. Therefore, you should be able to disable the harddrive in the BIOS without even opening the case! Then you do as Bleep says. You'll have to manually edit the boot.ini on the original master if you want to be able to boot both OS's without first disabling the 1st HD in BIOS in future though

You'll be fine.

The only issue is that W2K will replace ntldr and ntdetect.com on the system partition so you won't be able to boot to WinXP.

So, boot to W2K and copy ntldr and ntdetect.com from the XP Cd back and you're up and running.
