I am having a problem installing Windows NT workstation on my computer. I partitioned my drive into 2 partitions, and am installing NT on the primary partition. I formatted the drive using the Win98 format command, because I couldn't find a format command on the NT disk. The problem I am having is that NT can't locate the primary partition to install. What am I doing wrong??? Thanks for any help!!!

Don't use the win98 bootdisk or partition utility.

The NT bootdisks have a partition utility you can use. Follow my steps in your other thread.

If you formatted your partition using Win98 - most likely it is formatted in FAT32 - something which NT does not support (Win2k does). You will need to either reformat that partition in FAT16 or delete that Partition all together and use the NT Setup to create a partition.

Just delete all partitions and boot off the NT4 CD. Follow the steps there. But remeber NTFS 4 has max partitions of 4GB at setup.

Somthing to mention, if you use NTFS you will not see any other drive unless it is NTFS.FAT 16 will enable you to see both partitions.IE.. for a dual boot (NT and WIN 9x) use FAT16.

My $0.02 worth -

Jac59 is right. But if will NOT be having a dual boot system then I would recommend to go with NTFS. Also remember any shares on this system are not seen by Win 9x/Me machines on a network. But NTFS is more efficient as compared to FAT16!

That's not true. Windows 95/98/Me systems can see and access NTFS network shares. We have it setup like that at work in a peer-to-peer situation, an NT Workstation machine with NTFS, and it can be accessed by all the 95/98 machines.

I thought that was only true if you installed a third-party NTFS driver (which, by the way, in its non-freeware form, can write NTFS partitions from 98 as well). Is it true out of the box now?

As far as I know - this is not true - but I myself have not checked it out. Last when I did a WinME client could NOT access the NTFS share of a Win2k Server!

Win98 and WinME cannot access NTFS partitions, there is some third party drivers that allow read access to NTFS for NT4. I wonder whether this is still possible in NTFS5 as it defies the whole purpose of having a secure file system if someone can boot with a dos stiffy and install drivers to allow dos to read NTFS?

9x kernal OSes (including ME) can NOT write to NTFS on a *local* machine (without sysinternal's ntfs4dos), but can on a *remote* machine.
