Installing Windows on Maxtor 160GB hard drive on an IDE card

Basically, I can't get it to work because of the 137GB limit on windows xp. I have windows installed on my 120GB hard drive right now. I went into windows, used max blast software, and formatted the hard drive to 151GB or something along those lines (while connected to the IDE controller).

Whenever I boot up the computer with only the 160GB hard drive attached, the message I get is NTLDR missing (something like that, might have messed up the letters in that). I changed the boot order to CD-Rom, with SCSI 2nd so thats not the problem, it won't even boot off the CD.

What am I doing wrong?

BTW, I did install the card, and dos and windows both recognize the drive and the card. So that is not the problem

If you are trying to install Windows onto the 160GB drive, you will need to do it on a smaller partition. You can not set up Windows on a single partition on a size larger than 137GB. (Unless, maybe, with a Windows XP with slipstreamed SP1 or Windows 2000 with slipstreamed SP3. Again, maybe, since there is also a registry change that needs to be made). You would have to create a smaller partion (any size under 137GB) and install Windows on that partition. I use a 20GB partition for my OS and programs, and partition the rest out for my data. Also, I'd get rid of the MaxBlast software. In this day and age, IMO, it is unneeded. If you really feel you must have one large partition, install on a smaller one, then get and use Partition Magic 8 to resize your partition to use the remaining space.

I just installed Windows 2000 Small Business Server to that SAME drive, and am also using that card. I don't think the card is the issue, but the others may be on to something with the partition size. I partitioned mine into 2 80G partitions (one for apps, one for data). Here's the tricky part, and I am not sure if you did this. When installing windows on the hard drive, you must first use the max blast software to create a driver floppy (yes, floppy) disk with the ATA133 drivers on it. Then when installing windows (at least in 2000, and I would be surprised if XP is much different) press F6 during that initial stage to install other (SCSI) drivers. It will ask for the floppy. Follow directions and you should be home free from there.
It mentions on the documentation that comes with the box the limitation of the drive size if NOT using the card. I am not 100% positive my experience is the same as yours (because of the XP) but hopefully the info will help!

Actually, you had 4 posts in a row. But nevermind...

If you are not using the default IDE channel on the mobo for the install and instead have a sepearate IDE card running the drive, I would agree with the previous poster's recommendations. Hit F6 when prompted and load the necessary drivers for that card. That should correct the issue, although the 48bit addressing may still come into play. But...I would try the drivers issue first.
