Installing Windows Vista Beta 1

Hey,

I created a partition to install Windows Vista onto. I have it on the same drive that I have my C: on and Win XP installed on. How would I go about making it boot into Windows Vista or XP at my choice? Rather, how would I go about being able to run them both at once (kinda like how a linux bootloader would work). Are there boot loaders that would work with this XP/Vista combo?

it comes with it's own bootloader just like XP, once you install it, it'll make vista the default, but if you want to make xp the default, in either OS go right-click My Computer>Properties>Advanced>Startup and Recovey Settings button and choose whichever one you'd like to make default

I'm a tried and true beta tester (all the way back to Win98 SE) and I haven't even been invited yet. I hope they do that soon.

I am getting a copy soon. I was lucky and met a guy who works for Microsoft, so he is supposed to get me a copy. He said that they have already talked about giving it out to anyone and everyone, because this time around they want it tested a lot so they don't have the problems they did with XP...

I heard that they'll do that with beta 2...

And honestly, while I do like playing with new and untested stuff, I don't really have the time right now to give it the thorough testing that is desired, so it wouldn't be of much use to MS or myself even if I were eligible to test it. Beta 2 will be more complete and hopefully crash less, so I may give that one a try.

MSDN users have access to it as well, such as myself.

That being said, a couple personal screenshots:

I'm currently posting this message from Vista. I've been using for about a day and have yet to find any features that distinguish Vista from XP other than some GUI changes. I've encountered a BSOD when trying to unistall QoS Packet Scheduler and the icons keep losing its images once in a while. Maybe running it within VMware has to do with those problems but it certainly is not an eye-opening experience at this moment. Too early to tell though.

VMWare caused too much of a headache for me to install. I threw in a PATA drive and installed it there.

The biggest thing that's bugging me right now is the lack of RAID support, as it's caused a loss of access to 300GB worth of space.

Did you guys install 32 or 64 bit? I'm contemplating which to install first.

I had only grabbed 32bit from MSDN, but I have both now, and I'm comtemplating trying a dual boot, or throwing another IDE drive into the system and installing it there.

11-12 months? What makes you think that?
I built a new computer for Longhorn because I've always participated in Beta 1 from Windows 95 through XP. This time, however, I didn't get an invitation for some reason. I don't know why because I submitted my share of bugs and comments. Anyway, if Beta 2 isn't until next summer, my new "testbed" will be marginally obsolete, and I'll have to upgrade the display adapter and CPU.

Anyone run into issues with NIC drivers? I installed it on an older box I had laying around and it didn't like the Kingston NIC. I tried a 3com .. nope. Certainly Intel will work .. nope. Sigh Compaq .. argh .. I don't have all the model numbers I tried with me at the moment but I didn't see any of them listed when I tried to load them manually. Anyone know of a NIC that works that I can pick up from a local store?

The Microsoft MN130 NIC works.
The driver is included in the supplemental driver pack.

OH, YEAH. I installed XP drivers for the nVidia (PHY layer by Marvell) LAN adapter on my Asus A8N-SLI Premium board. Device Manager showed no problems with the Ethernet adapter, but nothing under the sun would allow it to negotiate a connection and obtain an IP address. This adapter worked "right out of the box" with both XP and Xandros Linux. I gave up and scrubbed Vista off the computer. I'll try again when they get to Beta 2.

My Marvel was detected, and the drivers installed, perfectly fine (on both 32bit and 64bit). Not sure what's going on with what you've got, but it shouldn't be the case.

I broke down and stopped by Circuit City and grabbed a Linksys LNE100TX and I am finally able to use Vista with Internet connectivity. Now I just need to get the old SoundBlaster Live running.
