Okay,

so I have a couple nicks in my windshield caused by rocks thrown by moving vehicles on the hwy.

I have full coverage by AAA in CA.

Will insurance cover the cost of a replacement windshield? And, will they raise my rates? I've had my current insurance for a little over 2 years and I pay about $2K per year.

The cost of replacement is about $1K through dealership.

I don't really want to go through insurance because I'm afraid they'll raise my rates, but my GF is pressuring me to do something...

I'm in the same situation with insurance and my GF regarding my tailpipe. Some jerk kicked it or jumped on it while we were parked in a movie theater parking lot. Now it hangs lower than normal and seems loose. I have the same question regarding this situation

I wouldn't file a claim. Whether they raise your rates depends on how long you've been with the company, your age, and your driving record. Call Safelite: Glass repair. They will reapir your windshield as good as new for about $200 or less. I've used them here in Indiana. They are in all states.

They won't fix your tailpipe. You can fix that yourself. Get under there and see what is wrong. Might just be a clamp that needs tightening.

You're still going to have to pay the deductible if you go through your insurance. Either $250 or $500 depending on your policy.

A "couple nicks" and your GF is complaining? Maybe pics would help.

Insurance usually covers glass, and they won't raise your rates (well, maybe if you file 3 claims a year...). You might have to pay your deductible, but some companies waive that on glass claims. Call and find out.

That said, $1k? Go to a glass shop and get it changed for $200-400 instead. Or go to a junkyard and get new glass, then pay a glass shop to install it.

Insurance *might* cover the tailpipe if you can convince them that it was vandalism, but having driven around like that for weeks won't really help your case.

Not sure about insurance in Cali but most places you have a lower deductible (or 0) for glass.. and the claim is that a glass claim will not increase your premium, but it can cause you not to get the lowest premium on renewal.

As for the exhaust, get under there and take a quick look.. exhausts are often held on by rubber hangers and it sounds like one is stretched out or broken. If this is the case I cannot imagine it will be much to get it fixed - especially if you do it yourself.

If it is just some nicks then you can get that repaired instead of replacing the whole windshield usually. That type of thing is typically under comprehensive (if you have it) and usually won't raise your rates since that is none of your fault. But double-check before you assume that.

Insurance won't cover a loose tailpipe But like others said, check the hangers and such, not hard to do.

I have AAA and here is their policy:

How do I file a claim to repair the glass on my car?

AAA has a streamlined glass-only claims process. If you have Comprehensive Coverage, you will be covered for windshield replacement, but you will have to pay your deductible.

Glass-only claims include:
? Damage to the front windshield, driver side glass, passenger side glass and read-window glass
? Damage may include cracks, chips or scratches to the glass and molding
? If the window can be repaired rather than replaced, your deductible will be deferred

There should be no damage to the body of the car or interior upholstery, and no missing personal property. If any of these conditions exist, the claim should be reported as an All Other Auto Claim (see All Other Auto Claim FAQ for more information)
