so I was involved in a hit and run earlier in the week. I got the guy's plate, called the cops, and filed a report. I'm assuming that the police report would be received by insurance. Will my insurance already go up since I was involved in an accident even if I don't turn it in?

car is fine. broken rear bumper on a 2005 accord LX. I'm assuming that a body shop would probably charge $600+ to fix and repaint the new bumper. I haven't made any calls yet to confirm.

Had a similar thing happen with me recently except that I didn't get the plate.

State Farm told me that the accident would not affect my rates because it would not be an at-fault accident. The deductible for my uninsured motorist coverage was $300 because I couldn't get the plates (would have been $100 if I'd gotten the plate information), which is less than my collision deductible.

I had a clean driving record at the time and I'm in State Farm's lowest risk pool (their Mutual arm and not the Fire and Casualty arm), so results may vary by other companies or with other driving records.

Not sure, but here they don't send the police report automatically, the insurance company has to request it.

If you don't make a claim, and don't get a ticket, then the insurance company never knows about any accident.

I was rear ended by a driver that ended up being uninsured (not a hit and run, we exchanged info but it turns out his insurance hadn't been paid for for the last 6 months) so I initially filed a claim through his insurance and got estimates for fixing the damage which from looking at it initially was just the rear bumper. All the estimates came back in the 2-3K range since both rear quarter panels and the trunk were impacted too.

Anyway, I ended up making an uninsured motorist claim through my insurance company (Amica) and may rates weren't impacted (prior to that I had a 100% clean record) although they did say that they would be if there were more of them (they weren't too clear on the exact number or the timeframe for that number).

Usually non-fault claims like that don't affect your rates since it was, well, not your fault.

As it was explained to me, it didn't have to be your fault to affect your rates. If you are in a bunch of not your fault accidents, you are still a higher risk to insure so they will up your rates.
