Maybe you miss Muqtada al-Sadr's little rampage in the South which he only stopped because he knows that the elections will bring a radical Shiite majority in the new goverment in a fair election. Which might I add the majority of Sunni political parties want delayed due to the violence in Iraq. Of course the news is that the elections are going foward despite of the violence. This of course will lead to resentment amoungst the Sunni population as they see the radical pro-Irainian Shiites in the south taking control of the new goverment. Then again the Brits are smart when it comes to keeping a low profile and blending in with the populace. They don't go around kicking in doors or running over peoples cars with tanks for looting scrap lumber in a nation with a 70% unemployment rate.
second, you have to militarily defeat them and remove the main source of their complaints, which is occupation, however you can only do that when you have created a replacement iraqi state, and that will take at least another 6 or 12 months. until then there will be a significant insurgency.
You are talking in convetional terms when what we are facing in Iraq is unconventional warfare based mainly on religous and nationalist ideas that cannot be undermined with time. Many people like to say we will leave when the "Job" is totally done. No more violence, everything rebuilt, perfect. This of course is an impossible task that will never be reached.
We cannot even stop the violence in our own inner cities let alone in cities half way around the world. The truth be told I have a feeling we will leave when the Iraqi government (a rough and weak democracy) is strong enough to say "fuck off! we are in charge, go away" and then they will crumble under the wieght of religious and nationalist under currents and a civil war will start. The main parties being radical Shiites vs radicals Sunnis fighting for control of Iraq.
Alwai will then board his plane to England or be beheaded by a Islamic court. Then we these same people will bitch that the "Job" was not allowed to be finished when in fact it would of never of been done. Imagine trying to force Islamic values onto the Born Again population of Christians in the US. Thats the type of problem we are facing and the amount of resistance we face is the same that would be faced here in this country if a foriegn occupier of another faith were to try to force their values onto us.
