Integrated 6150 vs AGP 6600

Hey everyone I'm looking at a system upgrade. Currently running a 2200+ with 1GB RAM and a GF6600 AGP Video Card.

I'm going to be upgrading to a 3800+ (DualCore) but most of the packages I'm looking at have integrated Geforce 6150 graphics. I'm wondering if this is as good, better, or worse then my old 6600?

I tried to find some reviews but I couldn't find anything that had 6150 and 6600 on the same charts

Just looking at the model numbers alone tell me that the 6150 will perform worse than the 6600. Plus the 6150 is integrated = stealing your ram.

the 6150 is not design for gaming... at all!!!

If you are planing on gaming at 640x480 at mem res than the card will suit you but other than that it is pretty crap, i know i have one. I don't game on the machine but it will be a gaming machine for my TV as soon as i upgrade my current video card the 7800gt is going in the machine

But serious you are looking at a 2 or more times less performance from 6600->6150

Also
http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics....elx=33&model1=541&model2=542&chart=196

There you can compare some scores with a 6200 and a 6600, the 6200 is pretty much a 6150.

6600 will be significantly faster but still slow as a card.

Since you are getting X2 3800+ I hope it's on a PCIe mobo. I would suggest to not get a mobo with integrated graphics to begin with as those tend to be poor overclockers. If you are on a budget, consider getting X1300XT $57

It's essentially an X1650Pro with full 12 pipelines Pretty good value. Your other option would be getting a mobo with AGP/PCIe slots (not recommended) or getting integrated and saving to upgrade to a PCIe card down the line.

I didn't want to make an assumption about the 6150 just based on model #s because it actually came out after the 6600. However I do agree with your comment about it "stealing" RAM.

I guess I might have to look at a "lowish" end PCIe card instead.

well if you feel like dealing with a rebate and have a little technical 'know-how' then this might be a solution

You can often buy a 6150 mobo for less than you would buy for an entry-level board without IG. There is an available PCIe slot on the board so you can add a discrete videocard. The IG is always available in case the videocard has to be taken out.

Downside is that the 6150 IG is found on mATX form factor. There are only 2 PCI expansion slots.

I have a board with 6150 IG and is is working very well for me. At first, I was buying this as a stopgap, as I was waiting for the 7600GT to come out. However, I soon realized that I could play any game at 800x600 with full or almost full quality/details on my 17-inch CRT monitor. So I put off buying the 7600GT...

So now, more than one year has passed...and I am still using the IG. I will soon ( in 2007, I promised my wife!) be getting a new monitor along with a next-gen midrange Nvidia or ATI videocard.

Of course, the 6150 is far from powerful enough for any serious gaming. But getting a board with 6150 IG could be a valid interim solution for an occasional gamer who has to wait a bit before getting a decent videocard.

PS: with the brand-new AMD price cuts, you would be able to get much more processor than the 3800+ for just a bit more money:

thorin, I understand you are getting a new system and won't be re-using you 6600 AGP in that system. If you are even a semi-semi-serious gamer, you should have no interest in an IG mobo, except maybe as a stopgap.

Thanks for the input guys, keep the ideas coming.

Oh and Tks for pointing out the price drops, I'll have to wait a week or two for my local shop to catch up

According to my experience, if your local shop has a bunch of processors in stock, one week or two might be too short. It may take a month for the new prices to filter down the channel even when dealing with a shop that has good volume. And the price drops are so massive that they are worth the wait.

Are you interested in gaming?

If so then buy something even better (unless really tight budget)

7300GT, 6600GT are good budget options if you can find them

Mainly WoW (daily). Likely CC 3 soon'ish (weekly). Three or four times a year I do D3, UT2004 (2007?) for LAN parties over a weekend, etc....

Unless you are going to play older 3D games... go with the 6600. I've played Unreal II on a biostar tforce 6100 (onboard geforce 6100 video) and was able to play in low resolution. Anything newer will run crappy.

are you able to access the anandtech 'to deals' forum? if so click on it and search for 6200. there should only be one listed. according to the poster, its for a 6200 for like $24 that you can bios flash into a 6600 and unlock all the pipes.

well assuming he's buying anything but a few weird mini itx 6150/6100 boards, and he's gonna definitely have a pci-e slot.

most manufacturers dont even bother putting anything but igp on the lowest boards, thers no point in making a non igp board for a budget line, as the volume of boards would not be worth it, and it'd probably cost more than the igp one.

that said, a 6150 is not gonna be as fast as a 6600. 6150 is pretty much only on microatx now, but having only 2 pci slots is not really that big a deal now. i mean a full atx board rarely has more than 3 slots. microatx generally just makes you lose x1 pci-e slots, which there are barely any cards for. plus with everything integrated into most boards now, 2 pci is probabl plenty for 99% of people.

Unfortunately, that is because they are in different leagues

If I were you, I would use the integrated until you can get an awesome deal. 6150 is just fine for desktop use. Don't think you have to buy a card just to complete the upgrade.

Sadly the 6600 is AGP and the new sys will likely have integrated and PCI expansion. So I guess I'll go with the integrated 6150 until I can get a deal on a 7200 or 7600.

That's exactly the point of getting an IG board. By the time you are ready to buy a videocard, you will probably be looking at buying a midrange card from the upcoming 8600 Series from NVidia or 2600 Series from ATI. Be sure not to skimp on the power supply, as some cards in the new midrange require a separate power connector.

I like the Antec NSK4400 for the kind of system you are looking at

I guess my main concern was that the 6150 wasn't even going to cut it for WoW and C&C 3 until I got something better.

Edit: And thanks for the case recommendation a number of my friends have it and are happy with it as well.

Being inbetween cards myself, I'm using a 6150 now. Going from a 7900gt to this just sucks, but wow is definitely playable... with everything set to an absolute minimum. The lowest frames I've seen were between 15-20 (800x600, no AA/AF FTW). So, it will get you by, but you'll be chomping at the bit looking for that good deal on a vc.
