Tax payers deserve to have their money spent on TSMC. Intel should be cut off. Cruel but they deserve it after the MTL hot lots fiasco and the RPL oxidation snafu. Can't keep pampering the stupid kid even after he's gotten an F in everything he was supposed to excel at.

Hell, I suffered for two years without a PC because I flunked two subjects. TWO SUBJECTS !!!

(Physics and Chemistry. Basically aced the Physics one in the next try but Chemistry was still so so).

Man the US government is lucky you aren't doing their strategic thinking for them.....
Maybe you misunderstood. Taxpayer money should be spent on the TSMC fab on US soil. Or GloFlo. Or literally anyone other than Intel. Intel has shown what they do with investor money already. What makes you think they will treat taxpayer money as more holy?

"Oops. We had some issues. GIve us a few more billions" and on and on it will go. Intel is filled to the brim with opportunity seekers trying to enrich themselves and making sure that they retire to a really swell life.

Broken clocks are right twice a day. Your reasons are so meanial compared to the process you apply to strategic thinking.

Like seriously go look at my post history I'm far from an Intel supporter but your logic is wack.

Informed by Intel's recent track record of past three years.
Well at least now they’ve suspended giving out dividends and I doubt they’re going to repurchase shares. From my understanding there are strings attached, and that the US has altered some of the conditions for disbursement of funds to be provided to Intel.

I’m sure it’ll get sorted out pretty quickly. After all, Intel needs it.

Who cares about US dotation. I am more interested in what will happen to Intel's fab in Germany. I think Germany invested 8 billion, so a foreign company will build a semiconductor plant there, yet we don't even know what will be produced in It.

IIRC, TSMC fab is a "go", in Dresden, but in will only produce trailing nodes for "automotive".

Intel fab in Magdeburg seems to be on a thin ice... Intel may cancel that project.

https://www.reuters.com/technology/how-intel-lost-sony-playstation-business-2024-09-16/

https://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel...n-6-chip-manufacturing-contract.889471.0.html

  • Intel lost PlayStation 6 chip contract to AMD in 2022, sources say
  • Dispute over profit margins blocked Intel-Sony deal, sources say
  • PlayStation deal could have generated $30 billion in revenue, sources say
quite painfull for Intel and for GPU division ... I am just not sure how they come to $30 billion revenue
Consoles APUs are hardly a high margin business. There is a reason why AMD won those contracts when they were near bankruptcy. Intel is not that desperate.

I also wonder about that.
They would need to sell the SoC for $300 and in total sell 100 million of them to generate that much revenue.
That price would be too high for that and even the number of chips would be pretty high but still doable.
PS4 sold 117.2 million until 2022.
PS5 sold ~61.7 million so far.

Actually Intel needs that kind of deals desperately. As they provide also silicon manufacturing they should have been easily undercut AMD. Only if is their process ready on time. Intel probably couldn't make the deal because they didn't know if their process is ready on time. With tsmc producing the product their silicon should have comparable area efficiency to AMD or they cannot compete with low margin prices.

How do we know the intel offered their own nodes? GPU tiles for the foreseeable future are going to be on TSMC.

They need volume for their plant. To compete with AMD with same manufacturer they could only make profit with competitive margins if their silicon efficiency is at least same level as AMD. We know it isn't - they could only compete with their own manufacturing cabability.

I agree with the comment that Intel was not willing to be low balled in 2022; they were still riding high. I am certain they would have made a different decision if they knew how things would be today. I doubt Sony was serious though. More likely they were using Intel as leverage to get better pricing from AMD. Trusting your next gen console to a company just entering the gaming graphics market would be one a hell of a gamble for a brand as valuable and high volume as Playstation.

Pat told the troops they have a AWS contract, so that's a good win. All of the DoD/taxpayer money will be welcomed also. Also said half the 15K reduction is done via the early retirement and buyout program. The rest will get notice in about a month. Unemployed for the holidays sucks.
