Intel 335 240GB - Missing 40GB

I bought an Intel 335 240GB SSD and I am missing about 40GB worth of space. I installed a clean Windows 7 on the SSD, which took up 10GB. I did not partition the SSD in any way. When I take a look at the 'My Computer' folder, I see two partitions: Local Disk (C), and System Reserved (E). Local disc has 188GB of 223GB free, while System Reserve has 61MB of 99MB free.

My question is how come 'My Computer' says my SSD is partitioned into two drives, where the total space of these two partitions are 223GB when my SSD has a capacity of 240GB (in reality I should have about 235GB). Secondly, if Windows 7 only took 10GB, how come I only have 188GB space left (223GB - 10GB != 188GB).

There is a difference between GB and GiB. One GB = one gigabyte = 1,000,000,000 bytes. One GiB, which is what your computer cares about, is 1024*1024*1024 bytes which is about 7% more than 1 GB.

A 240GB SSD then, is really more like 223.2 GiB.

This is perfectly normal. So is Win7 reserving 100MiB for system stuff. And nobody said Win7 takes only 10GiB of space, even if you don't install any service packs/updates.

Ah, I understand. Thank you for the explanation.

When I inspect to see how much space my Windows folder is using, it says 10GB.

How much ram do you have installed? Pagefile size could be set to equal the amount of ram which would contribute to HDD space lost.

Pagefile, Hibernation file etc. Hibernation file alone would be 16GB.

You can remove that by open a CMD and type powercfg -h off

The entire size of your SSD is correct as well. Abit sad tho, since with SSDs we had the chance of fixing that error. 1000*1000 vs 1024*1024.

What blastincap said. It has been like this since beginning of time. you dont get all GB the hard drive advertises, because of blasincap said.
Same goes for HD or SSDs .......thats the file system........ :|

If you have 16GB of RAM I would manually reduce your page file down to something a lot smaller. I don't know your usage model so I don't know if you are ever likely to ever run out of RAM, if you're not, shrink it down to 1024MB - 2048MB.

Also as mentioned above use that command prompt to disable hibernation and you'll reclaim another 16GB. I don't use hibernation and find it pointless on an SSD.

Regarding the 100MB system partition Windows 7 creates this by default and it is perfectly normal. It can be removed but there isn't any point really.
