Hi,

Im about to upgrade my Samsung 830 128 GB SSD to a 240-250 GB version. The SSD:s that seems to be good choises is :

Intel SSD 530 240 GB
+ Reliable technology
+ 5 years warrenty (20 GB / day)
- 10 GB less space
- Not as fast (probably not noticable)
- SandForce controller(?)
- 138,25 EUR

Question 1 : Will the SandForce controller be a problem?
Question 2 : Will warrenty only be accepted if it writes maximum of 20 GB / day?

Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250 GB
+ Fastest (probably not noticable)
+ 127,62 EUR
+ 10 GB extra space
- Less reliable technology
- 3 years warrenty

Question 3 : According to the review it is stated that it will last about 16 years with 50 GB / day? Is this correct?

Crucial M500
+ Reliable technology
+ 480 GB total
- 202,06 EUR
- 3 years warrenty

Question 4 : Is this disc as reliable as the others?
Question 5 : Is there something else I should know about these discs?
Question 7 : What disc would you choose and why?

That M500 is very sweet for the price! I paid 138€ for my EVO 250GB, but I'd consider the M500 if it were going for that price back then.

I've been using the EVO for 3 months, nothing to complain, very fast as usual yadda yadda yadda. I believe it's luck of the draw though. Write limits are only a real concern for SSDs use in servers or on professional levels, for everyone else it's a bit like anything else: you probably don't need professional-grade quality/stability, because you really won't notice the difference due to the low levels of stress you're putting on the parts, and size is only needed if you actually need it.

I didn't go for 120GB because of two things:
- 120GB SSDs are half as fast as any bigger SSD
- I felt 120GB minus 15% over provisioning wouldn't let me be very comfortable, considering my usage...

So in terms of size, it's like RAM: get the next level above what you thing you'll need. I need about 6 to 8GB of RAM, so I have 16GB. I need about 100GB of SSD, so I have 240GB.
Simple.

I'd pick them Crucial, Intel, Samsung based on price, but I'd take the Intel first, cost not being a factor.

I had my Samsung 840Pro fail on me in less than an year, so my take on Samsung SSDs is a bit jaded. My last build I put in an Intel 530 over the EVO, even though the EVO was less expensive.

Way I look at it is, do regular backups and get a drive based off price/size and speed. 830s are a rock for stability but since 840s are new, they are still working out some issues. Hell just yest my 840 pro received another firmware update.

Question 1 : No
Question 2 : Probably. That number serves as an estimate ballpark measure of abuse over lifetime.
Question 3 : That is another estimate.
Question 4 : Yes
Question 5 : No
Question 7 : All great choices. I'd go by price, followed by warranty. Which in your price shopping would be the Intel. Interesting how much more expensive the m500 is in your area.

It's a typical current price. OK; not great. Consider tax and shipping. Amazon is taxing to many destinations now.

I'm seeing more and more SSDs priced close to 50 cents per gig.

No tax and I have Prime. I didn't realize they had gone that low, though. w@@t.

I ended up going for it. PCPartPicker didn't really have anything comparable for less - just the M500 (slower) and a few generic-ey Sandforce drives (Also slower.)

It will be a nice upgrade from my Vertex 3.
