Intel 805 vs. Opteron 144?

I'm looking into SLI and I need a cpu, either the opteron 144 or intel 805, which would make more sense to get?

It depends on what you are doing. Overclocking? Gaming? Video Encoding or other SMP aware applications?

Overclocking for gaming.

Then I would go for the Opty. It will perform better for gaming, won't run like a flamethrower and will overclock easily on air cooling. My X2 @2.618ghz runs cooler on the stock heatsink, than my 805 @3.7ghz on water.

Will the stock heatsink for the opteron be good enough to push around 2.6GHZ?

i'd go with the thermalright xp-90c...for the opty. My friends have experienced 20c temp improvemnts from stock. ~$40

I think all opterons now come with the heatpiped cooler. Also higher end X2's come with it too. It is the equivilent of an XP-90, copper heatpipes and aluminium heatsink, its a damn good cooler.

I noticed the 144s overclock a lot higher then the 165s do, does it still make sense to get a 165?

144=single core, 165=dual core

Generaly, yes. If you don't plan on doing anything that would take advanatage of a dual core, might as well save some money and get a single core.

The 805 generally won't get that high without extreme cooling... though since it's so much cheaper, you have the extra money for something like the Big Typhoon.

Don't bank on 3.8GHz though.

Well not all intel 805s overclock that high, and they use too much energy.

well I was planning to get a 7900GT and getting a cpu that is fast, I don't multitask, and I'll probobly get a dual core once it makes sense to and once they get cheaper, probobly well after conroe.

No it won't. 3.5 is the best I cna get, and thats common, unless you have watercooling and a big power supply, and good memory. Stevty has watercooling and he can only get 3.7 out of his.

If you don't do multitasking, get an Athlon64 and call it a day. If you don't already have a modern system (ie. socket 775 or 939) then the AM2 + A64 is decent value. I'm tempted myself.

I ordered the 805D from Newegg along with the same M/B and RAM as they used at Tom'sHardware and here is the result with a Zalman7700 4.014 on air
Super PI to 1m = 24sec.

If you want to get a Opty 144, look for later stepping, they OC well, my OC to 320MHZ FSB on stock voltage.

I would like to see a screen pic of the 24sec score...the smithfiled are 2 netburst chips together and I have seen plenty single core (superpi is not SMP aware) P4's at 4ghz and not one of them was pulling a 24 sec time....

What version as well....
