I saw on the intel site that the intel app accelerator enables access on excess of 137gb in windows xp, can this be true.

This application is over 4 years old!

Is there any way to enable access to the unused part of my 160gb drive above 137gb without reformatting the drive.

Isnt it crazy that microsoft cannot format in excess of 137, and why ?

All thoughts appreciated.

Thanks

I think it's just a registry edit. Google it (137gb+limit+registry+hack...or something along those lines). You'll be able to format the rest as another partition, otherwise you'll have to make some sort of bootdisk (BartPE?) that can recognize and format the whole disk (assuming you want only one partition). There might be a way to increase the size of an NTFS partition with software, but I'm not sure.

I'm assuming this is an older system/motherboard that doesn't natively support large drives.

It's an IDE limit, not Windows. You need a controller and drivers that both support LBA48 in order to use IDE drives >137G. If you're using SATA or SCSI you won't be affected.

Well, it's a Windows XP SP0 and Windows 2000 SP3 issue too. If you have older versions of Windows, you won't be able to see over the above limits.

The easy way around it is to install Windows XP from a CD with an already-integrated SP2.

I feel a bit of a mug over this.

Thanks for the replies but the following seems to be the way.

When you install xp you are given options to format and if the disk is new you will be asked to choose and one will show 137gb.

If you delete this partition you will then be given the option to format a partition of ( in my case I think 156gb )

You simply load windows on to this partition and of you go.

Many thanks.

...because the version of WinXP you used had XP SP1 (or SP2) integrated inside of it. If you didn't, you'd still have that problem.

For that reason (and plenty others) you might as well make a slipstreamed install disk with the latest servicepacks and updates, and any programs you might like installed....just to save hassle.
