New Broadwell-Y Core M device, the HP Elitebook Folio 1020:

http://www.computerworld.com/articl...tealing-hps-elitebook-folio-1020-laptops.html

The new laptops are also among the company's thinnest ever, at 15.7 millimeters thick. They weigh up to 1.2 kilograms, offer nine hours of battery life and have 12.5-inch screens.

The Folio 1020, which comes in two models, have solid-state drives, 720p webcams and no fans. The premium Elitebook Folio 1020 Special Edition model weighs 1 kilogram and is composed of materials including carbon fiber and magnesium lithium. The Elitebook Folio 1020, which does not have the same composition of materials, weighs 1.2 kilograms.
The Special Edition screen has a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, while the Elitebook 1020 model has a full high-definition screen.

The Special Edition model sure looks tempting. 1.0 kg, no fan and 2560x1440 resolution. Now we just have to see how much it'll throttle in benchmark tests...

given the materials on the device and the fact it fits the 12.5 inch llama mountain reference device screen size, maybe this will be the best indication yet of performance relative to the llama mountain device.

looks very nice.

Local best buy in Houston told me that the Yoga 3 Pro has been pulled from their store. I was told "they" came in and took all of them. The employee suggested that something must be wrong with them.

It is still listed on Best Buy's website and shows availability at my local Best Buy. Anyone else heard anything like this?

I'll check my local Best Buy tomorrow and report back.

Lenovo is known to do this quite often with their models even if there is nothing wrong with them. For example once a model is discontinued they request new models be return to vendor and Lenovo will deal with the clearing out inventory instead of the Brick and Mortar putting the model on a big clearance discount.

Yeah, but we are talking about their new flagship line and the Christmas shopping season. The guy said they were selling quite well.

If it comes back less throttling I might be in the market for one of those.

looks like improved multithread and stagnant or very slightly improved single thread for 5200 vs 4200.

Not really surprising when you consider that it looks like the base clock speed went up a nice amount but the max turbo has gone down.

I have been saying the same weeks ago.
Which I responded to. This article makes a better case.

Nothing new there. The document with these slides have been posted weeks ago. That's what we are saying since a long time, AVX 512 for consumer SKL seems unlikely. More or less confirmed from Intel.
It is a proven method of ensuring that your niche ISA extensions remain niche.

Great way for Intel to drive widespread adoption and implementation

I don't think it's unlikely. I don't think they will build a separate Skylake core with AVX2, or will they simply disable AVX-512? But then why wouldn't they enable it in some SKUs? I think at least Skylake-K will have the ISA extension.

I wonder if the E3 12XX V5 series Xeons will have the new AVX extensions and if so, will we be able to use them with desktop boards?

Even with the K SKUs, Intel has had a long history of feature-disabling to enhance the market segmentation across processor lineups and platforms.

I see the whole SKL vs SKX and AVX-512 feature "enablement" as just yet another step in maximizing artificial market segmentation.

But in this case it really seems penny-wise and pound-foolish as it will surely delay if not outright negate widespread AVX-512 adoption. TSX all over again.

It will make AVX2 mainstream, though, so it isn't like there's no progress. Also note that AMD doesn't have any of these features.

Die space requirements and power usage for AVX-512 would seem much larger than TSX. We see different dies for different number of cores currently. It's not a huge stretch to have a core that physically would chop this functionality out vs fused parts. Client mostly doesn't care about performance anymore. It's all about cost and power, and if they can reduce die size and power budgets by keeping core growth down, why not.

AVX2 seems to pull a lot of power. So much so they have separate frequencies on Xeon when running AVX instructions. Why introduce another large system that few will see a benefit from, but all will pay for in the form of power and area?
