I have a noob question.. will broadwell support z97 chipset?
i am asking this becoz i am upgrading my pc and i am not into overclocking but i heard a rumor that broadwell might just support z97 chipset.

Broadwell-K will work on Z97, yes. Intel advertises fifth generation Core compatibility.

I have the Z87 PC mate paired with a 4590 and it works great.

Dell Venue 11 Pro 7140 review/benchmarks (Core M 5Y10)

Impressive performance compared to the 11.5W TDP Haswell-Y predecessor, more than 50% faster @ 3DMark Cloud Gate (and 3x faster than Bay Trail). CB 11.5 score roughly matches the 5Y70-based Yoga 3 Pro. Let's see how the new revision (Core M-5Y10c, 5Y31, 5Y51, 5Y71) performs in a proper design like this.

Do we know anything about the PCH on Broadwell, specifically Broadwell-U / ULT?

I'm hoping for USB 3.1, but there's no point in hoping if Intel isn't going to support it.

Looks to be a well executed design by Dell. Their 5y70 model should start shipping some time soon, so maybe we'll have a proper comparison between it and the Yoga 3 Pro.

Even Skylake doesn't bring support for USB 3.1 as far as we know from the leaked documents.

Hmm, that's interesting. Maybe it won't be from the chipset, then...But, even Intel's USB-IF employees say that it's coming early next year in select models:

"At our meeting last week, Ravencraft and his associates, Brad Saunders, a USB 3.0 Promoter Group Chairman, and Rahman Ismail, the USB-IF CTO, (both of whom work for Intel by day) told Ars that a number of device manufacturers are preparing to launch products in early 2015 that will have USB 3.1 Type-C plugs. “Some people are trying to get things out before the end of the year, but I can’t say who,” Saunders told Ars. “Clearly people who’ve been working on the spec for over a year” would be good to bet on, he added."

Wow, the new Venue 11 is seriously nice. That 3DMark improvement is staggering considering it lost the fan. Wish they had tested it with some real games that load the CPU too, make sure it doesn't throttle too badly in game.

There is nothing about Broadwell nor Skylake. Doesn't say anything specific.

From the digitimes aticle ~
Meanwhile, most next generation Wintel-based PC systems will also comply with USB 3.1 specifications, and therefore driving up demand for USB 3.1 chips for peripheral devices, said the sources
This could mean broadwell or skylake, also there's no mention of third party vendors adding support for USB 3.1 or whether that's Intel adding native support to the chipset.

Broadwell doesn't support USB 3.1 with Series 8 or 9. Even Skylake no USB 3.1.

mikk, any info on the process node the 100 series chipsets will be built on? Is this another 32nm deal or do we finally move to 22nm?

USB 3.0 barely works properly and you want 3.1? Half the time I plug in a USB 3 external on this Z87 box it installs the drivers (again, like all those other times) then does nothing, necessitating another plug-in. The speeds have finally been hammered out and are generally OK, but USB 3 is still twitchy. To put it mildly. Is Intel finally moving off slow old DMI 2.0?

I wasn't sure about Skylake though I knew Broadwell won't support it natively, however this doesn't stop mobo makers from adding third party solutions to their offerings like we saw during CeBIT IIRC. The digitimes article implies that a large number of new PC's will have USB 3.1 support, I'm assuming this to be true for the new 1xx based motherboards &/or new laptops based on Skylake that'll launch late next year.

"Taiwan-based IC design houses also said that judging from product roadmaps of notebook ODMs, most of new notebooks for 2015 will come with USB 3.1 interfaces"

?? For the most part, Broadwell and Skylake will make up the majority of the new laptop sales next year (sans Haswell leftovers, but nobody is arguing Haswell laptops will get 3.1).

Broadwell doesn't support USB 3.1 with Series 8 or 9. Even Skylake no USB 3.1.

Are those images exhaustive? I would be highly surprised if LPDDR3 wasn't supported. And those ports are just from the PCH--the DigiTimes article clearly talks about add-in chips.

Exactly.....from the end of the DigiTimes article,

DigiTimes said:
IC design services houses, including Faraday Technology, Global Unichip and Alchip Technologies, have landed related USB 3.1 IP and chip design orders, with a number of devices likely to enter volume production in the first half of 2015, revealed the sources.

USB chip suppliers, including Genesys Logic, Alcor Micro, ASMedia Technology, Prolific Technology and Phison Electronics, are also likely to begin roll out USB 3.1 solutions in the second quarter of 2015, the sources noted.

Haven't seen any mention off 3.1 on the current BDW-U laptops,

Lenovo G50-80
Dell Latitude 14 3450
Dell Inspiron 15 5000
ASUS Zenbook UX303LA-R4342H
HP Envy 17-k206TX
HP 15-r204ns
HP EliteBook 740 G2

only 3.0/2.0

IMO probably going to take some time and once it's becoming mainstream might see native support.

Of course. I thought we are talking about support from Intel, meaning native support. From Intel there is no sign of a USB 3.1 support. No surprise really.

There is no LPDDR3 support on Skylake-H/Skylake-S. Skylake-Y with LPDDR3 support won't be available before the end of 2015.

There is no USB 3.1 for Skylake ULT/Y as well on the chipset. Intel is planning USB 3.1 support for Thunderbolt 3.0 somehow. I think this is what digitimes means.

Dell Venue 11 Pro 7140 review/benchmarks (Core M 5Y10) - Link (German)

I have owned the 7140 for a month and concur as do other tech reviews. The one odd thing about this review is they tout a full sd slot that the 7140 does not have. It has micro sd, yet the review specifically points out a full sd slot and used it as a review plus. I think it was a lazy review and they assumed a slot since has a cover size that could fit one. Does not have one though and Dell states no full sd option.

The 7140 plays games I would not have expected to and smoothly and without throttling down to unsmooth: Unreal 3, Far Cry 2, COD 4, Earth Defense Force, Bulletstorm, Crysis Warhead, Flat Out Ultimate Carnage and Dolphin Gamcube emulator just to name some. Oh, and it handles complex Excel pivot tables that my 5130 would choke on and could not play any of the games noted here, since all were a slide show.

Games that play smooth at 1280 X720 or even up to 1600 X 900 and no apparent throttling down to impact smoothness:

Bulletstorm
Burnout Racing 5130
COD 4 5130
Earth Defense Force
Far Cry 2
Flatout Ultimate Carnage
Killing Floor 5130
Left for Dead 1 & 2 LFD 1 =5130
King of Fighters 13
Mortal Kombat Komplete
MX vs ATV
Nail'd 5130
Renegade Ops 5130
Serious Sam 2
Street Fighter vs Tekken 5130
Thunder Force
Toy Soldiers
Ultra Street Fighter 5130
Unreal Tournament 3

This is what I have tested so far, but happy with these working smoothly. This is with medium settings. For games perspective, I noted "5130" by games that also played smooth with LOW settings and 1024 x 768 on the 5130. The other games were very low frames and unplayable as a result on the 5130- even with lowest settings. Some of these on the 5130 did not work due to not enough ram and inadequate gpu.

I get on average 4.25 hours if just gaming. The top right quadrant area on the back gets very warm to near hot, but not hot like the Surface 3 or the Yogas. The Yoga 3 gets hotter and has a fan, which I find ironic.
