isn't 14nm the next step for nand flash?

Whatever it is it is more proof that the eight hundred pound gorilla is on the move again. First they ass kicked AMD almost into bankruptcy forcing them to sell of their fabs, then they ass kicked Nvidia into agreeing to avoid their x86 territory, and then they paid them each 1.5 billion for medical bills. Now they're building new fabs like they were cotton candy dispensers.

They're taking their lead in fabrication tech and expanding it enough that they crush any competition no matter how much better their designs are.

They can call it 14nm if they want, but the fact is that noone really knows how to get to that size. Will it be triple patterning with DUV immersion lithography, or will it be EUV ? Only time will tell.

EUV would be preferable from a throughput standpoint, but whether it's ready in time is anyones guess at this point.

Seems a tad presumptuous of you to conclude that no one knows.

Not really, since I work for ASML. Obviously we have internal timelines, which I can't share, but there is no way we can be sure if they are all met.

Going from DUV to EUV is a huge step, and it involves a lot of unknows.

Read up a few posts, it doesn't matter what the name of process node is.

It does when we are talking for the same company and since Intel’s roadmap was referring to 15nm after the 22nm, then the 14nm in the article could be a typo.

He actually gave a quick address from inside the fab... In street clothes! I was off on Friday, and didn't dare come near the place.

It was interesting to see they cleaned up the hallway between the new badge gates and the gown room - they removed all of the lockers, took down posters, put white boards up on the windows [for obvious reasons] with nifty silkscreens, etc.

I wonder if they had him [and the camera crew] gown up until they were at the location for the speech. Looks like he's near the chase between D1D and RP1.

Luckily I was sick that day - I can only imagine I would've had to park all they way at Fred Meyer's and walk to D1C if a service call was opened

A big thumbs up from me, too. I don't really pay much attention to how the media or general public perceives intel, but I sure hope they are getting the recognition they deserve for this. Seems you only hear about corporations expanding, when they are going overseas.

Well, when you're spending $5 billion on infrastructure, then the $250 million a year you spend on personnel (5,000 employees @ $50,000 per year, as opposed to $5,000 per year for China) is insignificant compared to the chance that the Chinese government will "borrow" all your equipment, and a year or two later have a state-owned company competing against you.

aww, i was hoping this would be for cpus. maybe a jump ahead in process tech that intel needs to stop arm taking more and more of the mobile market?

True. How cool is that, to have the President come to your place of business. Good or bad President, that has to be an honor.

That's how I felt about it. It was a good speech too - although mostly focused on math and science education. But the president had some good lines and it was entertaining.

lolz..

the reason why i think intel is building fabs in the US now is because of the all the recient leaks they had.

Speaking from listening to my sponsors, intel has been very annoyed at all the leaks which resulted from fabs sourced outside of the US.

And to me it sounds like this is a solution for them despite the higher production cost.

And believe me, intel has had a lot of problems as of late in trying to keep things confidental.
I always ask permission before i post anything or make sure the NDA has expired, but I am not everyone.

Ok, Intels news page say 14nm

As i understand it, the factory will be ready on 2013 but 14nm manufacturing will begging later by 2014 ?? They will need time to rump up yields etc ??

Equipment installation and calibration. Working out production bugs. Employee hiring and training. Etc.

I'm sure you could think of more. You can't just build a factory and push a button and stuff starts coming out.

That's cool... I used to work in Litho, and the ol' 248nm SVGL Micrascan was my best friend (or my worst enemy, depending on the day. ) Personally, I've always liked the SVG/ASML scanners more than the others.

Not to mention the grave miscarriages of justice that comes from the leaks to being with.

We all know the crisis in Libya and recent mayhem in Egypt are the price we innocent people pay when folks in Asia break NDA and talk about history-altering hardware like the 990X and S2011 ahead of schedule!

This fab is being built within the US so as to prevent the very gates of hell from opening, as this would most assuredly occur if for some reason a devil worshipper speaks of Haswell before the NDA expires.
