The Centrino package consists of the Pentium M CPU, Intel wireless network chip, and Intel 855 chipset. Don't get too caught up in the GHz ratings on the CPU because the P-Ms are more powerful per MHz than P4s. If he's playing games I'd get a 1.6GHz+ P-M with ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 or higher graphics, and then consider a desktop. If not, then anything under the sun will do, and focus more on portability.

For an alternative laptop for light\moderate gaming, CPU intensive stuff, the eMachines M68xx series is nice. I have the M6805 (the lowest model) and I have almost no complaints about it.

Centrino set ups are great. They are just what MDE just said IIntel Pentium-M CPU, Intel 855 Chipset and Intel wireless. I have one that is only 1.3 Ghz and it does very well still. I would compare it to a 1.8-1.9Ghz P4 or so. I can play games just fine even with a Radeon 9000 64MB mobile, just not at the highest settings... Actually plays Far Cry decently enough.

I would reccomend one because they on the most part are very light, have great battery life, and do not put out alot of heat. All of which are important things to consider when choosing a laptop. Essecially if you are going to lug it around and actually put it on your lap.

Centrino just about doubles battery life for most notebooks. Well worth it if you travel. It also runs cooler.

Keep in mind the new Pentium M's, with double the L2 cache (2MB) and a few other enhancements are hitting the streets now. Might want to keep an eye out for some good deals on those. The new ones will carry a model number like 715, 725, etc.

Download battery doubler, it really works well! I also reccomend disabling all devices you arent using to increas battery life up to 200% (IE CD rom, wireless card, USB ports, etc)

Centrinos are good but I'd rather have a Athlon64 notebook. E-machines makes a nice one sold at Best Buy.

oh yeah.. i got it this morning, took it to work, start installing most people got it over the weekend..

anyway.. I think a centrino with a better kick ass video card allows you do to more.. but it'll probably run ur battery down at the same time.. overall I bought my notebook to do some work at home + play counterstrike = super fast
