Intel CEO slams Rambus

From The Register:
Intel CEO Craig Barrett says that his company made a mistake getting into bed with Rambus.

In an interview published in The Financial Times, Barrett admitted: "We made a big bet on Rambus and it did not work out." He said that it had been a mistake to rely on another company for technology that "gates your performance".

In the interview he also slams Rambus's policy of suing its competitors. "We hoped we were partners with a company that would concentrate on technology rather than seeking to collect a toll from other companies."

However unhappy Intel may be with the situation it finds itself in, it is not one it can back out of easily. Chipzilla is contractually obliged to support Rambus with the P4 processor, due on the market (some would say over due) next month. ®

I just read the article and it seems the mainstream sheep still think that RAMBUST is faster than conventional SDRAM.

<< Enter Rambus, with memory chips that produced a sharp improvement in memory speed. >>

<< Rambus, meanwhile, smarting from the poor support from memory chip producers, and PC makers which favoured slower but cheaper types of memory, >>

*SIGH* If only I had a nickel for each RIMMjob some idiot got because some clueless salesperson told them that Rambust was better.

fkloster woulkd be here in a minute saying Intel should keep the faith, Rambus is the memory of the future.

I think Tom said it best in his 1.2GHz Tbird review when he said space travel may be in our future but that doesn't mean that we should take shuttles to work in the morning. Gots to love his bias

So Mr. Barrett must'a been living on the moon or somewhere, and not listening to us techies that have been shouting Rambus Sucks for the last two years! Anyway, a tip-o-the-hat for coming clean.

I'm here. This does truly make me feel bad. I honostly believe that if Intel had prepared a chipset properly to take advantage of Rambus memory, things would be better for all. I still believe that serial memory is exciting but I will admit to all that I certainly jumped the gun on this technology. Flame me if you want but I stand firmly w/my belief that the technology behind rambus is very, very promising, and it (rambus) will stretch its legs even more w/ the P4 architecture. God I feel stupid...

Well I gotta say that fkloster stood his ground well. Don't know too many people that would be continued with the odds he was facing. Gotta respect him for that.

RDRAM should be used for low memmory consoles not for high end workstations, or any PC for that matter. DDR and QDR is the future for the PC.

Amazing... Its one thing for a company to discover their mistakes... but to get them to admit it, that takes guts...

Everyone is slamming Rambus here, and that's cool with me as long as we are talking "Rambus the company" and not "Rambus the memory design", i happen to think there are some great advantages to this memory design.

DDR-II is based on that very design, will you slam it to when it comes around, i think not.

Rambus design is a design that lies in the future, and the big problem is latency, which can be resolved, just look at the Alpha 21364.

<< and the big problem is latency >>

Not for me, it?s the price! I could live with the latency, but not at the price it comes with.

Don't feel stupid about this, maybe AMD will come around one day, when the design is ready for them, the stupid ones here are not Rambus, it's Intel.

The Rambus design is a good one, and will surely have it's piece of the cake in the future, but Intel tried to make it the only choice, and that didn't work, not yet.

And if that wasn't enough Intel released a real crappy chipset called i820 which actually killed the good rep about Rambus.

Let's just wait and see what the Alpha team can do with the Rambus design..

I don't know about you.. but I'd feel stupid if I had shelled out the kind of cash some have for Rambus!!
