Basically, X38/48 are the High end and differ from the P35/45's because they can do 16x16 PCI-E2.0. The X38 has since been superseded by the X48 which is a revised stepping of the X38 silicon that runs cooler and uses less power and has official support for 1600FSB. The P35 is a budget chipset that differs from the other primarily because it has 'only' PCI-e 16x 1.1 slots. The P45, like the X48 has superceded it's 'older' cousin the P35 by being built on a smaller fab process (65nm) running cooler, less voltage and 8x8 pci-e 2.0 crossfire along with a few neat BIOS features thrown in from vendors.
