AM3+? Yeah, some of those boards had issues. But Intel is a bit more strict, and at least at stock clocks / turbo, Intel specs out the boards to be able to handle all of their CPU SKUs. Which top out at 95W TDP. Unlike AM3+.

Since I'll never use workloads that utilise AVX, do I still need to set an offset for the 8700K? Hopefully not as it'll save me some time testing.

Exactly, not to mention bulldozer was a pig. No Z mobos will have a problem with sustaining clocks safely and reliably.

Okay, I apologize again.

I would still like to see someone with cheap Z370 like MSI PRO A running prime95. If you guys will have time, so I have no problem building/recommending this setups for my friends.

I would just set the offset to run ~4.2 (ie, if OC is 5.0GHz set offset to 8). That should be safe regardless of your overclock. I would not want a big overclock with no AVX offset. You may find yourself running something with AVX one day unknowingly.

Having said that, poster Chrisch on OCN has some great results with AVX2 and 8600k
Almost 200W and only 66C

Nice.
It's important to know what cooling his using, although if it only goes up to 66 with whatever he has, then I don't see it going over 80 with a 212 (unless he's running ln2 )

If i get my 8700k to 4.9 with those temps, i'll consider myself a lucky man

Water and de-lid. The link is there for interested people. CPU-z bench was run at 5.4GHz IIRC, just checked... it was 5.5GHz.

Thank you kindly sir! I only plan on a small OC, namely all cores at 4.7GHz because I don't need more for my gaming needs. What would be a nice AVX offset for that, if any is needed at all in that instance?

I also like keeping SpeedStep enabled because I can have weeks where I'm only working with Office so no need for a constant OC.

I think this guy does a very thorough review on memory speeds, overclocking etc for the 8700K. His consensus was 4.7 and 3000mhz ram was enough for gaming, there's only a couple of frames in it. The 8700k totally destroys the 7700k by the way, it's quite the revelation.

Yeah Digital Foundry is another of my favorites. I disagree with the 3000 memory though, as shown by TPU. I believe DF hasn't tested higher frequencies or else they'd found 3200 being the nicest too.

Anyone have a pre order with shopblt? I would think if they(shopblt) has some coming in on the 23rd that Newegg and BHPhoto should get some in by then as well. Wondering if I should pre order there as well to cover all my basis?

But he did mistake. He used dual channel for i7 7820X.
While 3000MT/s doesn't tell you that much, also latencies are important.

Since i7 7820X/7800X and i7 8700K have same IPC, I would assume that with fast (low latency) quad memory channel i7 7820X/7800X will be better.

Nobody does "DEEP dive" in this stuff.

That shop has gotten some bad past reviews about unreliability, however some here bought X299 no problem. Why place multiple orders? I wouldn't personally - in fact I haven't.

I'm pre-ordered with B&H. I called them today - they are just back from holiday - and the guy said he hasd no ETA to give me. So I'm just going to hang in there till I have the CPU in hand meaning I won't buy my case, or NVMe drive till then. Might be a 970 Pro by that time, or a Define r6 with USB 3.1 up front. Likewise I'll wait on the motherboard it may ship with updated firmware......the waiting is a drag though.

So they never received stock while they were closed last week? That's a kick in the balls.

Are you sure a cheap X299 board can handle a 7820X at turbo speeds?

While I do agree that he should have used quad-channel memory (although it's doubtful it would have made difference), I completely disagree that all three CPUs have the same IPC. Skylake-X shows slight regression overall in gaming and in some cases serious regression in contrast with Skylake/Kabylake/Coffeelake due to it's new cache structure and departure from ring bus. Coffeelake is hands down the king of gaming CPUs for now and probably won't be surpassed for quite some time in that role, especially with the rumored 8-core in the works for early next year.

My CPU *really* needs to show up so I stop buying stuff. I decided that not adding the GPU to the water cooling system (even though it already uses an AIO) was just silly, so now I have ordered a GPU block and backplate from EK as well.

Another review this time of the 8600k and 8400. 8600k beats the 7700k overall, and the 8400 is very competitive against the 7700k. Interesting to note he did a 2500k at the end of the review and it gets annihilated. So i think it's safe to say that the 2500k is past it's used by date for gamers (chuck in a 3770k though for a nice boost)
