Amazon is terrible at processor and motherboard preorders. They've flubbed Ryzen, Skylake-X, Threadripper, and now Coffee Lake preorders.

I know. The the same thing happened with my 6700k as well and I ended up ordering from B&H and canceling. I only ordered from Amazon because it was around 10AM before I thought about it, and they were the only one taking orders at that point. I only will be paying $340 for it, if it ever shows up at least.

I understand your frustration all too well. I hope that all of your orders will be fulfilled shortly.

I'll be putting together my system this weekend, exciting! I was hoping for a 1xxx BIOS but Asus is still on 0505, so no overclocking for me yet and that's alright.

25-26C ambient temp. Case is Fractal Define Mini C, with 3x140mm + 1x120mm fans. Top lid is off and the heatsink is oriented to make the most of vertical airflow. Idle CPU temps are around 35C with main fans off. No dGPU installed yet.

As said before, my setup is silence oriented, all fans are running at low RPM, so it should not be taken as a point of reference for performance/cooling oriented builds.

Ah, yeah your ambient temp is a good 5-7C higher than mine and my case is larger with 5 140mm fans so I should be good to go with a Noctua U14s. I'm pretty pumped to see how well things go. Thanks for the response.

Still waiting on the 8700k (should be here tomorrow) but got my motherboard in. Went with the Maximus X Hero as planned. Trying to make a judgement call on video cards between a 1070 and 1080. Will be gaming at most likely 1440p once I add a second monitor - I just don't see myself needing or wanting to spend the cash for a 4k monitor on top of all this new hardware and worst case I'll get a second 1080p in which case the 1070 would likely be fine. I'm worried about the impact of the second monitor of I were say playing a game on one and watching Netflix on the other. I've never had to worry about a second monitor before.

Opinions?

Three Arctic AC F14 fans and one of the 120 mm fans that come with the case. All of them are voltage controlled, motherboard supports both PWM and DC, has 1 CPU fan header, 1 Pump header, 3 System Fan headers. One System Fan header is situated near the center of the MB, the rest are near the margins, thus easy to access via the case cable routing holes.

Thanks for the info.

Aren't those Arctic fans PWM? Is Voltage control better in some way?

Get 1440p and a 1080 hands down. Period. Get it. Now. I have both and wouldn't go back.

They sell both DC and PWM, mine are the DC model.

To be honest I did not rtfm on voltage vs PWM control, pros and cons etc. If memory serves me well PWM fans had the advantage of enabling lower RPM settings and more accurate speeds, but nowadays good DC fans work under 500 RPM and I don't mind less accurate RPM settings as long as they get the job done. The PWM fans are also almost 2x more expensive, at least where I shop. I guess one would have to buy them if the fan control system did not support voltage control.

I have a 1070/1440p setup. It's perfectly fine for gaming but if I had the budget back then I would go for a 1080. Just gives you that added bit of performance room.

Of course this is 1440p/60. 1440p/120+ and you really need to crank up the GPU. (I don't play twitch shooters though)

I have a 1080, 3770K@4.5 and 1440p 144hz panel. I would highly recommend the 1080. I am very much looking forward to seeing how much my incoming 8700K bumps my minimum FPS.

I’m looking at motherboards, has ASUS resolved the voltage drop issues yet on the Maximus X? I’d like to overclock and prefer ASUS, but will go another route if this still has not been resolved.

Edit: Looks like it has not been resolved yet.

Assuming you mean the Hero X, there isn't a voltage drop.

The Strix boards have been updated to address the issue I assume the Maximus would be as well if it hasn't already.

There was a thread regarding the above bios release posted a day or two ago by ASUS saying it was to address vdroop. The Maximus had a BIOS update on the 16th but just says first release bios.

Also please let us know what type of FPS increase you get going to the 8700k.

Thanks

See above ASUS claims Maximus line didn't have the same level of vdroop and didn't need the "fix".

My 8700k got delivered today, and I think it was my first processor purchased without anything else in the box. It felt strange lifting the box, and feeling almost no weight. I almost thought Newegg forgot to put the CPU in the box, but then I remembered that it doesn't come with a cooler.

I'd lean the same way. The 1070 is likely to handle most games at 2560x1440, but it'll require a setting or two to be turned down in some high-end games. I did use my 1080 for 2560x1440@144 in Overwatch, but I do like that my 1080 Ti gives me a bit of extra buffer to ensure there aren't any dips below the refresh rate. Although, that's what G-Sync is for.

I went ahead and put in an order with B&H and we'll see if my today order there ships faster than Amazon's release day order.

For the life of me I cannot get the USB 3.1 Gen 2 (the red one) I/O to recognize USB drives. Driver is installed but nothing. Anyone?

I used the old install to see how that goes, can always do a fresh one if need be.

Also Uplay is giving me weird bugs (screenshot not working, overlay not working). Worked yesterday on the old build. Not sure if it's related.

I think its most likely trying to use the old build that is your problem, but that is just a guess from 40 years experience.

This is exactly the type of problems I have seen in the past trying to re-use window installs...and why I don't do it anymore. I am sure there is a way to get it sorted, but then I also would wonder what other kind of stuff is not operating ideally that I can't see.

That's what I'll find out and do a fresh install if need be. It was getting late and my curiosity got the better of me. I was thinking: my USB 3.0/3.1 drivers appear to be from M$ despite my taking everything form the Asus site (although 2 things were driver-less until Win Update), which may be the cause?

Flacco, thank you! I am indeed looking at the Maximus line, and conflated the Strix vdroop issue as affecting all ASUS CFL mobos.

I plan on doing some before/after benchmarking, and will share my results. I don’t anticipate huge gains, but my wife’s old E6600 machine is really showing its age, especially in Photoshop/InDesign. She will be inheriting my 3700K CPU/mobo/RAM, which will be an enormous upgrade.

LOL, that's hilarious. Also, I'd never reuse a windows build like that myself. I was surprised once that it just booted with a new board and CPU, but I was like "screw that". Gave me the creeps so I reinstalled.

Actually, its more like 25-28 years, as I didn't start using Windows until 3.1 in the early 90's. I still have the install disks.
