I purchased a Q9650 semi-recently and noticed it had "Intel Confidential" written on it. It boots up as a Q9650 in bios without any change.

Did I purchase an illegal CPU that should have never left the Intel facility? I read they were test chips but I don't know the rule about them being sold in public.

Well I do know they are not allowed for sale on this forum. I don't know how strict the guidelines are as to who is to have them or not, but they are around.

What you have is a ES.

Can you check and see if the multiplier is locked or not? Just for my curiosity.....

Those are technically still Intel property, though a few do make it out and are sold in the real world. Sometimes you can find them on ebay, but I think they've tried to clamp down on that.

If you see men in black wearing the Intel logo in their name tag, don't stare, run!!

Try to use CPU-Z and tell us your new CPU information like stepping and stuff, I hope it uses the same stepping as mine since at retail, only one stepping was used, otherwise, it will be a 130W CPU monster in terms of power consumption, considering it's an engineering sample.

Ill run that CPU-Z when i get home

I haven't checked if I could change the multiplier, I just changed the FSB to bump it to 3.6ghz running stable

Technically they're not supposed to be resold, although it does happen and usually nobody really cares enough to do anything about it.

If the guy you bought it from didn't mention that it was an engineering sample, though, you got scammed and should demand a refund.

its a test sample or such, i've had one pass through my hands before, it worked fine. its not like a big secret leak or anything. it was probably sent to some motherboard or whatever company for compatibility testing. you just have to know u have no warranty on that thing lol

Ok, it's the exact stepping and settings of my CPU, so I wonder if its the final product with no changes or differences compared to retail, why it's an ES?

probably is, engineering samples are sent to partner companies for testing, so they generally don't send stuff that is totally half baked.

I purchased an E6420 ES on here without being told by the seller. I was a bit peeved at first, but it ran fine and was perfectly stable. Intel's not going to chase you down over a $250 chip.

Its no big deal to me personally. ES cpu's usually are just like what will be sold in the channel. So you shouldn't worry about running into any abnormal problems.

sure no warranty sux but on a cpu ive never worried about warranty, only worried about what last guy ran it at as far as volts and temp. ES i thought are suppose to overclock better since they are more cream of crop maybe just regular i dunno

yeah im' not to worried hence why i posted now, i bought it probably a few months ago.

I just registered to this site recently and read that above post someone linked about engineering samples and had no idea that they were apart of a NDA with intel.

It's been running fine, never crashed or anything.

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't in any deep trouble or anything

Send it back asking for a refund

they only cost pennies on the dollar and the person makes a huge profit on them

also some cores maybe disabled or

or lower clock speed SSE SSE2 SSE3 SSSE maybe disabled or non working

cache maybe bad

i'd fully test the CPU's instruction sets CACHE and cores

CORE DUO ES's or higher are crap and may have disabled items and may not overclock at all!

the ONLY GOOD ES chips are Pentium 4 woodies
