Intel Processor Roadmap - September 2008

I've been tracking Nehalem for months. Here are the latest and most recurring speculative releases:

* week 40 (September 29 - October 5, 2008)
* week 44 (October 27 - November 2, 2008)
* first two weeks of Novembe

In my opinion, the first two weeks of November seems most likely. Afterall, the first Penryn (QX9650) was released on November 12, 2007.

As far as preorders go, I'll probably be one of the first to let you guys know

WOW $284 for an i7? That sounds really tempting. I was thinking of going to a 9550, but turbo boost sounds too tempting. I don't even play games anymore, so CS4 should run very nicely.

965? Why does Intel keep using that product code? Conjures up not so fond memories of obsolete chipsets and Pentium Ds .

The last digit being a "5" versus a "0" obviously denotes the faster QPI, so we may see 925 and 945 someday.

What is odd to me though is that with the current "20" increment and the top product already being 965...that would imply they really only left room for one more speed-bin (985) in the Bloomfield platform. Kind of like how everyone wonders what will come after the Phenom 9950.

Wow! Between these first three, the 920 is such a nice bargain and best bang for your buck!

Cool, looks like Intel isn't ignoring the mainstream and enthusiast segments in this launch.

Are those all quad cores??? I'm going to follow the link now... [EDIT] Based on that German chart, sure looks like it. It won't tempt me away from what I just built, though. Not even close.

agreed :thumbsup:

thats the first thing I thought also.

Also are these dual core/quad thread or quad core/octo thread?

Am I the only one who noticed the TDP? 130W for all of them? What happened here? Penryn's consumption was looking so good and now they're throwing 130W chips at us AGAIN?

TDP does not equal CPU power consumption. The 130W TDP QX9650 in reality consumes about 65W, the 65W TDP C2Ds consume around 30W.

Nehalem will pull a few more watts than Penryn at the same clockspeed (due to the IMC being on die, and the cores being kept 'busier' with HT) but it won't be anything drastic: http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=3326&p=8

In fact based on these results Nehalem has significantly better performance/watt.

965 is far from obsolete. lots of benchers still use P965 for hardcore benching (Asus Commando comes to mind).

You mean releasing new SKU's or continue selling existing SKU's?

Its doubtful that too many new SKU's for Penryn will be created for the desktop given that we haven't had too many new SKU's created for Penryn since it was released nearly a year ago.

Until now and for the foreseeable future, Nehalem is the only competition to Penryn so why would Intel release new Penryn SKU's to compete with Nehalem sales?

Yep. My Q6600 systems (five here) won't be upgraded until I can drop in a Q9650 for $100 a pop. Figure I just got to wait about 3 yrs.

Buying a brand new LGA775 system today has its merits if you are going dual-core as you will have the option to upgrade to quad for decently cheap in a couple years time.

Diving into a quad LGA775 today is pretty much an EOL situation. Still though its not like you are wasting money, you do have a kickass computer regardless whether it is Q6600, Q9650, or Core i7 965 based. Same can be said for the Phenom 9850 and 9950, in all cases you aren't missing a whole lot by not having the absolute top of the line these days.

Hasn't 3 november been confirmed today?

Also, the article I read said something about the bus being locked, so you can't overclock the 'mainstream' i7's. That be f-ed up. Also, prerelease chips will be shipped soon, so people can bench. BUT, no overclocking results can published. Rumour has it something is wrong with either the chipset or the CPU itself. Not so much as in phenom kind of wrong, but wrong nonetheless, making overclocking a pita or flat out inpossible.
