48 EUs in Cannon Lake GT2 might also mean 48 EUs in Ice Lake GT2.

Cannonlake is 24EUs for GT1 and 40EUs for GT2.

Curiously, I discovered Intel GPUs (Gen 9) can do half-precision at 2/1 rate, and double-precision at 1/4 rate of single-precision. Tangentially, half-precision in games is a topic that AMD Vega revived.

For Intel 1/4 rate has been for DP since the Ivy Bridge graphics architecture, which is Gen 7. 2x rate half precision is a Gen 9 feature.

Good find, but looking at the block diagram, there's still only 16 lanes of PCI-E 3.0 from the CPU.
I think that is referring to using those PCI-E lanes for storage, not video.
The ASRock DeskMini H110W already does this.

Well, it also says for storage.

You can dual x4 NVMe and still have 8 lanes left. That's plenty for GPU. Yea, it is indeed similar to the ASRock board. Now it'll be standard.

Update: Differences are nonexistent between PCIe 3.0 x8 and x16 for GTX 1080.

Process availability date plus verification = TTM (Time to Market).

exactly. Which means whatever comes from 10nm+ is in 2019. No Ice lake in H2 2018 like eddman wanted to make us believe by drawing on PR-slides...

Incorrect.

1) Icelake got taped in 7 months after Coffee Lake
2) Brian Krzanich said on the earnings call a month ago they will start with the simple SKUs (i.e. Cannonlake) and in the second half they will release the complex SKUs (i.e. Icelake).

It got taped "in" in June so not even finalized desing product and will require more time to get taped out. Plus we are in mid 3Q2017 and we don't have any official info of an actual launch of a 10nm product this year, I don't expect then to transition from 10nm to 10nm+ in 6 months when they took 2 years to iron out their 14nm ( and Samsung takes 1 year ). I am a bit skeptical about seeing an actual product before late 2018.

I think Intel at this point pretty much gave up on 10 and is focusing their efforts on 10+.

You're writing that as if I'm trying to sell you something. I'm just attempting an educated guess. Q4 2018 is a possibility, considering that intel is apparently giving up on 10 nm for standard power parts and focusing on 10+ nm. This is if things go smoothly, as mentioned. If not, then it could be as late as mid 2019.

It's really amazing how badly some people want Ice Lake to come in 2019

Why would anyone care???

Don't pull stuff out of context. he was literally drawing lines on PR-slided to make predictions and it was nicely pointed out that by that logic we had 14nm++ products in 2016 which obviously is about 1 year wrong. So if you would actually trust the PR slides and add that 1 year delay, first 10nm+ products would be well into 2019. Of course you should not trust PR-slides.

I missed that comment and you are right. Honestly I did not pay attention to 14++ in there. I was thrown off by intel's late 2017 CNL launch claims, but that doesn't seem to be either, based on that info. This does mess things up.

I just based my statement in actual info. I also went against people saying AMD releasing a 7nm product in 2018 because GF claimed volumen production in 2H2018.

probably just like the people on this forum who want AMD CPU / GPUs to be delayed and/or uncompetitive.

PCWatch reported that Ice Lake is planned for 2018, though...

Its possible to launch in Q4 2018 . But depends on where Intel is with 10+ process today and the progress they make over the next 12 months. Intel hasn't done itself any favour with their 10 nm process rollout. Cannonlake seems to be ramping in Q2 2018.

http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/column/ubiq/1076326.html

So if people are skeptical about Intel's execution with 10+ and that Icelake will come out in Q4 2018 don't be surprised.

Is there any special about Icelake that people are waiting for it in anticipation?

Icelake is Intel's big chance to grow beyond the Skylake architecture, since Kabylake; Coffeelake; and Cannonlake are all apparently the same base core design. The Haifa team must find it quite gratifying that Intel keeps recycling their work over and over.

Ice Lake is a new architecture, bringing the first meaningful IPC increase since Skylake in 2015. Note that according to slides from Intel manufacturing day, 10 nm + has less "transistor performance" than 14 nm ++, which may manifest as slightly reduced peak overclock.

There was a Cannon Lake-S (for desktops) 8-core in the works, before it was cancelled and replaced by Coffee Lake 6-core. Ice Lake is an opportunity to realize the 8-core.

Use fast storage? Possibly PCI Express 4.0 to buff the DMI link.

Use integrated GPUs? Cannon Lake has Gen 10, and possibly more cores: 320-384 cores (40-48 EUs) in GT2. Ice Lake Gen 11 is likely to build on that.

A Coffee Lake Hex was probably already on the drawing board in case Intel struggled as much with 10nm as they did with 14nm. 22nm was the last 'timely' rollout - and even that had at least one 'scary' moment with a large regression.
