I wonder how this affects generation 3 drives. Seems pretty late to introduce a new model when the G3 drives are supposed to come out this quarter.

My personal computer usage scenario sees no benefit from a fast SSD. Plus, the things that I do that *would* benefit from a fast SSD, I just don't do those things. Therefore SSDs are overpriced for everyone, and nobody should buy them.

That was sarcasm, for those of you who don't speak Internet.

with 96gb of ram you don't see a huge benefit from ssd except when your indexes get too large.

Who even shutdowns their computer anymore ? up.

I don't restart my computer anymore since my current setup is very fast at resuming from S3 sleep. Actually the bottleneck for me is the Acer monitor which for some reason takes about 2.5 seconds to light up after resuming. By the time the monitor is ready, windows already has finished resuming.

This is a big reason I am holding off on SSD, because I just don't feel it would help me that much.

Not good enough. Who even shutdowns their computer anymore ? What kind of computer nerd would run more than 2 to 5 startup items as well ? I bet some here don't even run any. There no point of having a billion stuff to start when your computer boots up.

Okay, then don't buy one. No one is holding a gun to your head. Some of us do benefit from it and feel it's worth the money. Why do you care what others do with their machines?

The 80GB and 160GB share the same firmware revision number from over a year ago. Unless Intel's programming is that good, I have a feeling the 120GB might have an updated firmware. I hope that any improvements, bugs they picked up over the past year trickles to the 80/160.

On the other hand, they could have programmed/designed the SSD that well that the size is independent of the firmware. Anyone bought one yet?

Probably not much. I'm expecting they will out the G3's at even lower price point. The launch is supposed to be in February now which is 3 months away. When the first intro'ed the G1, they reduced the prices at an astonishing rate.

I just sold 2 Mushkin Callisto 60GB drives that i had in a RAID 0 array. Wasn't impressed with their performance. I already have 2 x 80GB Intel G2 drives in RAID and they feel snappier. (No I don't know how to measure 'snappiness')

Anyways, the point I am making here is that I sold the Mushkins and ordered one of the new 120GB Intel SSDs. I will provide benchmarks/screenshot if you need me to.

Um...I shut down my pc every night. Am I the only one that does this?
Nope.

My server is 24/7 but my desktop gets shut down every night.

Same thing I noticed with my two Vertex2 drives.

The SF drives look good on paper but aren't any better than the competition in the same price range.

is the intel 120gb G2 drive being discontinued within 1 month and replaced with a much faster drive?

i assume the 120gb g2 is still a perfectly fine drive and a super upgrade from a 150gb raptor?

It is a much faster drive, I am not sure about discontinuation though since they are made on different process tech they can still be co-made. But it might be better for them to just sell the chips for other uses.

My machine will only get shut down if i'm away from the house for extended periods of time like a vacation or weekend getaway. When its not in use and I'm home or around it goes to sleep.

It's hard to pass up the 120gb G2 right now, $164 basically from Newegg. And a game. It's a crazy deal.

Where are you seeing the 120gb G2 for $164? I am looking at buying one and it is $200 with a free game.

Yeah but that is a prepaid card. I assume you would have to spend that on an Intel product. Am I wrong?

I noticed alot of products that have rebates are in the form of prepaid cards.

Yeah, I bought my first SSD today with that deal. It was a quality drive in a very usable size for $165. I'm sure there will be more deals with them coming up but I'm happy with this drive.

Same here. Is there really any point in doing a full shut down when sleep mode hardly uses any power anyway?

Slightly off topic but I too just bought my first SSD with this deal. I assume the prepaid card is a Visa card? Is there a way to cash that in at your bank either as a deposit for for cash? I ended up spending my last prepaid card in bits and pieces and ended up leaving a little bit of the balance.

yes

Good question. I just bought the Intel 120GB SSD. I finally got my Gigabyte MB rebate, which was advertised as a prepaid card, and it turned out to be a Visa I could use anywhere. So I'm hoping this one is too!
