I wouldn't be surprised if your new Asus Board didn't support the prescott. I bought an Iwill kk266+ Board and clearly on the box it stated it supports current and future Athlon Xps. Pure BS. The board supported (or ran) nothing higher than a 1900+. I'm sorry, but I have no sympathy and could care less for those of you who bought your new, pristine 875 boards only to have them not support a processor available 6-8 months down the road for $800 a piece in batches of 1000.

In fact you should be thankful your 875/865 boards won't work with the prescott. Your current board won't work with it so you'll need a new board + processor. This will give you a perfect excuse to indulge in some Hammer goodness!

Makes me wonder a little... like why did the 865/875 come out just before this?

Well, if it's a different platform that requires special software (Don't 64-bit processors need a special OS?) kinda' deserves a new mobo - one that'll use it to its fullest potential, I hope.

I was planning on upgrading my motherboard by the end of the year anyway so it doesn't make any difference to me. For the meantime I'll probably go to 3.06 GHz on my current motherboard.

For those who can afford to drop $500 bucks ona video card it isn't a big dear.
The budget-oriented people won't be jumping onto Prescotts anyway so it makes no difference. And by the time they do the systems will cost peanuts anway.

If the new Prescott cpu's aren't compatible with current socket 478 boards (865/875), why don't Intel just go straight to the socket 775 LGA boards?
I mean, why bother releasing a socket 478 version of Prescott, that will be obsolete a few months later, if ppl have to buy a new mobo as well.
I would wait a few extra months for the socket 775 boards and chips, rather than upgrade my mobo just so I could use a Prescott 478.
At least my 2.4C hits 3ghz with ease, so I can probably wait till then. :frown:

I'm all with the idea that this is a bunch of nonsense. I especially love all the talk about the FMB specification being changed and that being the reason. Heh, especially since XBit claims that it's changing from FMB 1 to 1.5, while the inquirer says that it's FMB 1. Oh, and let's not forget the Asus P4P800 manual which states that FMB 2 is implemented.

I'd still say that the explanation for this is that some mainboard manufacturers didn't follow VRM 10.0, which is supposedly necessary for Prescott. Oh, the reason I say that some probably didn't follow VRM 10.0 is the nice little bit on TomsHardware's 875 review, "In any case, the VRM10.0 is not mandatory."

The 'confirmations' and all that are floating around that prescott will be incompatable just don't make sense, mostly because every 'confirmation' is different!

It looks like Overclockers.com is skeptical of this claim as well. I certainly hope time will bear this out to be nothing more than a rumor...at least for the boards from ASUS and the other top manufacturers. The 865 could not only be a great chipset, but a long lasting one if it can support the first Prescott CPU's. Look how far the NW1.6's went...

Yes i understand that most I875P and some I865P mobos will be compatible with s478 prescotts, which you do not. Quit trying to act smart now and read what i said earlier. It depends on whether the mobo has the new VRMs or not. Which the P4P8X and P4P800 both have.

You're the one trying to refute one rumor with another. Not a good plan.

requiring new VRMs for prescott isnt a rumor, its in Intels spec sheets for prescott. Working on acrobat linky.
