Intel E3 Xeon 1231 V3 or i7-4790 or AMD FX-8350

I am buying a new PC for hardcore 3D work and some OCCASIONAL gaming (its gonna stay that way )
Confused between the above processors....I dont plan on overclocking....a little help please?

The Xeon is your best bet. Its cheaper and has virtually the same clocks as the 4790. High singlethread performance is important for viewport performance (rotate, pan zoom) so the xeon over the 8350.

While true, it will depend on the OP's budget and what programs he's running. Hardcore 3D work could be anything, and it might be worthwhile to go with the Xeon and get a better video card instead.

But, since no budget was given, I assume that money is no object. Accordingly, I suggest this computer.

If you live near a Microcenter, go for the $279 4790k plus $50 off a motherboard combo.

I'd go i7-4790 if you can afford it -- it's hard to make a recommendation with so few details, though.

Processor :- Intel Xeon E3 1245 V3 (cuz the 1231 was out of stock)
Motherboard :- Asus H97 Pro
GPU :- Sapphire R9 270x Toxic
HDD :- WD Purple 2TB
SSD :- Corsair Force GS 240GB
CPU Cooler :- Seidon 120V
Case :- NZXT Phantom 240
PSU :- Seasonic S12II 620W
RAM :- Hyper X fury 2x8GB

Remind me if i've missed some essentials.


Softwares i'll be running are Maya, 3Ds Max, Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere, etc.
Not big on gaming. Just gonna be Dota2 and Fifa with the ocassional FPS.

Nice build, but why get the Xeon and not get ECC RAM? It's not really a cost premium these days, but you would need a 'pro' board that supports ECC. Gigabyte even release a few boards this year (e.g. GA-6LXSV) that support vs Xeons and ECC. If I am relying on my computer for work like this, I would want a real pro board + ECC. Just my $0.02.

I have a similar setup but with a Z87-pro board. You do not need ECC ram for basic use. .

The Xeons are typically 100 mhz slower than the comparable i7 series, but they are locked and cannot be overclocked. However the price makes them a bargain.

OP states 'hardcore 3D work'. That's hardly casual use...
