seems its the end of overclocking the G3258 on cheap H97M boards etc.

Really wanted to buy the H97M Pro AS Rock on newegg for $68. So I can overclock the G3258 but now it seems like we are all screwed.

if I buy the H97M PRO right now on newegg am I guaranteed to get a board with a bios version lower than 2.0? ASRock released this new microcode exactly 1 month ago. But then I see on this thread people are reporting G3258 only allowed 1 core on windows 10 without the update?

What you guys think go for the H97M PRO right now? or shell out $20 extra and get the Z97M AsRock for $88 instead?

user also verifies its true

QUOTE Cons: I was going to give this 5 stars but as of this weeks update they have removed CPU overclocking from the UEFI. that was one of the reasons i chose this motherboard and the more expensive K series processor

Lets just say I shell out the extra $20 for the Z97 is there any real benefit to this? because the 4790K already runs at 4.4 GHZ by default with stock cooler.

Even if you were to raise it to 4.6 GHZ you would be wasting money on an aftermarket cooler, and even then a $84 board is unlikely to actually do 4.6 so all in all its not even worth the trouble.

So taking into consideration a 4790K is just fine at stock speeds what real benefits would a Z97 actually have over the H97 that would be worth this extra $20?

Doesn't matter. I recently upgraded my H97 PRO4 to 2.0, realized that overclocking was disabled, and then downgraded to 1.9 with no issues. Overclocking is working again.

I'm very happy with my H97 Pro4. Paired with a G3258 it is a perfect HTPC which does not require a discrete graphics card.

Resale value would offset the price difference in the end most likely.

Stock cooler? Functional....Barely. Only use I've found for them is the quick on the MB box build to make sure combo is functional. A person can throttle even at stock under certain load conditions.

Overclocking? It's possible to sometimes bump up the speed and lower the vcore at the same time. You might have to run a fixed vcore to accomplish it. Using a negative offset sometimes will cause issues depending on clockspeeds.

Upgraded my old Gigabyte H55M MB and i3-530 with the Asrock H97M Pro 4 and a i5-4690K. I was going to go with the G3258 but got a great deal on the i5-4690K from Microcenter.
The Asrock H97M Pro 4 came with V1.50 bios but no overclocking functions in the bios. Like you, I flashed it to the latest bios V2.00 but still no oc functions. Flashed back to V1.90 bios and the oc functions were there. Currently running my i5-4690K stable at a modest 4.2GHz oc with Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and the latest updates.

I'm using a low profile Scythe Shuriken Rev. B SCSK-1100 CPU cooler (a socket 1156 cooler will fit a socket 1150) left over from my old build with a Lian Li PC-C37 low profile HTPC case so my oc is limited by temps.
I may replace the Scythe cooler with a low profile Noctua cooler or try to squeeze in a liquid cooler.

I'm running my G3258 with the stock HSF at 4.2 as well. It will go much higher on this board (tested up to 4.5 ghz) but gets too hot with the stock HSF. I was pleasantly surprised how well this overclocked. It's an HTPC so I don't have any need to push it and I didn't want to purchase an additional fan.

I'd RMA any chip that did that. I ran Prime95 Small FFT for three hours on my Xeon E3-1231v3 + stock cooler the day I got it and it never dropped below the 3.6 GHz quadcore turbo.

I agree. If you have overclocking disabled it really shouldn't be an issue. The G3258 only runs two cores so it can run a mild overclock with the cooler which is the same as the hotter K series chips.

I wonder if sometimes people have overclocking enabled and don't know it. I had to disable some things on my Z board to get it stable before I got a better cooler when load testing.

A 4790K, with the same stock cooler as the 1231 V3, would be trying to run at 4.2 in that situation. The stock cooler really couldn't cope.

My 1231 V3 runs all 4 cores at 3.8 under load OK with the stock cooler.

4790K is 88W vs the 1231 V3 at 80W.

A hyper 212Evo can barely cope with the 4790K at 4.4 on all cores under load.
