Intel fps issue

Hi

I'm looking to build a HTPC shortly and was starting to make a short list of components. Had the i5 SB on there till I read this article:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4083/...-core-i7-2600k-i5-2500k-core-i3-2100-tested/7

Intel has committed to addressing the problem in the next major platform revision, which unfortunately seems to be Ivy Bridge in 2012. There is a short-term solution for HTPC users absolutely set on Sandy Bridge. Intel has a software workaround that enables 23.97Hz output. There’s still a frame rate mismatch at 23.97Hz, but it would be significantly reduced compared to the current 24.000Hz-only situation.

Gutted that it's not going to be fixed properly anytime soon. Anyone using one of these in a HTPC? Is the issue noticeable? If so, does the SW fix make it any less noticeable?

Thanks

I'm on about the fps issue which is also in the Clarkedale chipsets too, not the SATA problems. See the article link

It really depends on how picky you are, how good your display is, etc.
You may find that the problem isn't that severe with the software workaround applied, but then again you may not think it's good enough for you.

Looking for some real world feedback. Anyone here using Clarkdale/Sandybridge for Bluray playback?

Tweakboy, lolz either you are trolling or you are an idiot. If you already have intel stuff, you could get a nice HTPC based video card to get rid of the frame rate issues. Ati HD5470 should be good for your needs.

Isn't there already software out there that can afford custom resolutions from a given hardware set? BTW, I'm not sure about which specific area of HTPC performance the concern is really coming from. Unless you are running an analog display/projector, what is truly benefiting from a non-24.000 Hz feed? For instance, are display products showing 1080p24 input acceptance not at 24 Hz?

To be fair to him, I think he's both.

b2t: I know some people who are pretty sensitive to that mismatch, I honestly need to concentrate and look for it to notice it.

From my understanding, the issue can make a high-def movie look like it was a soap opera, if you're one of the people sensitive to it...

The soap opera effect comes when a 120 Hz or 240 Hz display takes 24 FPS video and interpolates additional frames. The 23.976 issue should only cause one extra frame to be inserted every 41-42 seconds.

Ah, thanks! I haven't owned anything nice enough to create that effect, but I've seen it on some televisions. If the 23.976 issue only inserts an extra frame every 40 seconds or so, that sounds like it would be almost unnoticeable. I'd love to see some example footage in action...
