The bigger news is Xiaomi is getting into the laptop business. That's going to upset a few apple carts.

This, I think, is the more interesting tidbit. So 小米 really is going to make laptops?

Apollo Lake/Broxton should be much, much better in this regard. The SoC architecture itself will be entirely new, CPU cores new, GPU new, ISP new, etc.

These chips can't come soon enough.

Yea, I was just going to say "to late", till I read your last line. But who knows, we thought CT on 14nm would be a big improvement too. While we wait for those, Apple and ARM just keep bringing out new and faster chips.

Atom will never be on par with what Apple does, and it will have a hard time going up against even the bog standard ARM designs.

But they don't run X86 Windows, so not really relevant.

Intel just needs to deliver good performance/feature gains each year with its PC-oriented Atoms.

I really, really wish that AMD's 20nm tablet parts hadn't been canned. Enough thermal headroom to let the Puma/Jaguar/whatever cores run at a sensible headroom could have made quite a big difference.

AMD is irrelevant in the tablet market and will continue to be. Their sights are set on taking on Xeon in servers and Core i-series in PCs...we'll see how that works out.

Oh, definitely agreed. The 20nm part could have maybe given them a chance against Intel in the x86-specific part of the market (especially with CT being such a disappointment), but I'm under no illusion that they would have stood a chance against the Mediateks and Qualcomms of the world.

Oh well, given the collapsing sales in the tablet market, they probably made a smart decision about what to cut.

ARM will squeeze out any 2nd contender in the market. Why should AMD/Intel even bother?

x86 chips in mobile devices? This will fail badly

One nice thing about x86 is that it is a standardized platform.

So even the lowest end device should be able to install an updated version of the OS. This unlike ARM which needs specific builds.

Sounds like a gimmick which keeps Average Selling Price of the big core SKUs artificially high for Intel shareholder reports and continues Intel's attempt to be relevant in the tablet space.
