Lisa Pearce, if I'm not mistaken.

Huh. As of March, she was the uh

Vice President of Intel's Visual Computing Group?

In this interview, Pearce calls herself the head of drivers:

She is very cheerful, probably because the big boss wasn't angry at her yet.

So, from Raja's Intel bio:

Raja M. Koduri is executive vice president and general manager of the Accelerated Computing Systems and Graphics (AXG) Group at Intel Corporation. He leads a business unit chartered with delivering high performance computing and graphics solutions for integrated and discrete segments across client, enterprise and data center.

So he's in charge of the whole kit and caboodle. Pearce must be a direct report. Makes sense given the full stack ambitions of Intel's GPU program.

The driver team didn't already answer to him? That would be nuts.

Not really. Its unusual for one person to be in charge of both the team developing the hardware, and the team developing the software. They both could report to the same person above them, but that person doesn't deal with day to day stuff like a team lead would.

if not he can always follow the nvidia model... hire a bunch of monkeys to randomly type out code and drivers, and hopefully one of them will write something workable they can roll out on a WHQL package, because we know every single last nvidia driver always breaks something at a marginal performance boost for what that driver was intended on.

Raja's team includes blockchain accelerators and any others related to compute acceleration besides the CPU.

In other news, ARC A310 is rumored with 4-6 Xe cores. Probably on the level of Iris Xe.

I will get ARC and do a bit of coverage once in my hands. Thinking the 5 series. 7 would be nice but might be a tad too high of a price for me.

Im gonna get the A380 6 GB version, ASSUMING it will be genuinely 65W and no 6-pin.

At the rate things are going, I may not upgrade my GPU till 2023 - depending on the actual release date, Battlemage would be a consideration. I'm not interested in anyone's v1.0 products - I tend to avoid them like the plague.

Much of the next-gen might not be available yet in 2022. And I'm starting to wonder if Intel will manage to get even semi-acceptable drivers out in time for Battlemage.

Presumably Intel sends out Alc cards to developers of popular titles so they can test on them. That should help, going forward, with newer titles.

As for me, I am more interested in their low-end parts with decent media encoders.

The only thing that would make this better would be for people to have to buy it with some type of crypto.

Not really. Its unusual for one person to be in charge of both the team developing the hardware, and the team developing the software. They both could report to the same person above them, but that person doesn't deal with day to day stuff like a team lead would.

For their first release it would be a lot better to have a single person directly involved in the day to day of both sides in charge. Putting extra layers of communication and problem resolution between those two teams makes it much harder to develop a product.

Frankly I'd want my hardware and software teams to be talking to each other directly on a daily basis to get issues sorted out without having to run it up and down multiple layers of management that has even less of a clue about the details that matter the higher up they are.

@VirtualLarry

Would it be ironic if it included a cryptominer?

For the first time in a long time they are under proper leadership now. Gelsinger was rated 99% in 2019 and #1 CEO among american companies while in VMware. If you look at another site, Comparably, he went from 65% in May of last year and below companies of similar size to 72% now, which is above the average. These are employee ratings.

I kept track of Bob Swan and he was 62. If you search for Kraznich, he's 59 or something and rated among the worst.

The past 3 CEOs since Barrett were not that good. At least Barrett and Otellini was sane. Kraznich was crazy.

Gelsinger was in the team responsible for 486 development while other parts of the company were mucking around with the i960, which put them in jeopardy.

Multiple times he reiterated that he's willing to sacrifice few % of margins if that's what's required. We think that's logic but that's not what the company operated on in the past 25 years.

Andy Grove said something like "The ingredient we use is Sand, but it's the people that create amazing products". Every time I look at lawsuits regarding patent infringement, or companies like Rambus that are patent trolls, or bankrupt companies being bought for several hundred million dollars just for the technology I shake my head. Because technology doesn't create better technology - better people and hard work does.

I've read of many articles how talent from the company either retired, quit, or went to competitors. Apple, AMD, Nvidia, etc, etc.

They have not only stopped the brain drain but are bringing talent back to the company. Some quote Pat's return as the reason for it. Many have left during the past 5 years. What he's saying is backed up by results and makes their claims much more believable.

They have problems in multiple areas, and since it was ingrained for a long time, it'll take time to get it better, nevermind fixed.

Niche games developer creates a niche game a bit like PC Building Simulator, but in case it is a flop and they end up having to sell it super cheap, they hide a cryptominer inside the code? An interesting business model, but it might work.

-Double Irony for having the only people that download and play it don't have the actual hardware to effectively mine crypto anyway, so the secret miner doesn't even work...

It recommends a GTX 1060 which seems quite high for a 2D pixel game.

Anyway... we have wandered a bit too far. I wonder how Intel's Alc does with 2D graphics

A310, A350, A380
A580
A750, A770 8GB, A770 16GB, A780

I wouldn't mind an A750. 5 series having only one is weird.

With Intel saying Battlemage is 2023-2024, I expect Q3.
