Gets 95 good dies (20.1mm by 20.1mm, 0.08 defects per cm²).
So even assuming $9,000 (which seems low to me for a 6nm wafer), that's closer to $100 per die.

Are the densities between two processes really the same? On Samsung it might be bigger, which will change the equation. Also modern semiconductors are limited by performance per watt. TSMC 6nm ends up in a far superior product.

With SS8 Arc A770 might have ended up being $200. Then the price difference per die does not matter, because you'll end up with an inferior product and your product positioning will be far worse.

We know the node names for Samsung processes are pure crap. SS8 is more like TSMC 10nm.

N6 costs a lot more than SS8.

Who cares? This is akin to cutting off your nose to save your face.

You might save few dollars on chip production but now you have a chip that's a generation behind in power use and performance. And A770 is at a performance level where 10-20% difference in performance starts impacting price by 30-40%.

No one cares if your process is 1/5th the cost if it's last generation. It might as well be zero.

So rather than Intel selling a $329 card, it might be a $250 or a $200 one. That's why in cutting edge semiconductors, best process is king. Focusing only on chip production ignores the market dynamics.

You might save few dollars on chip production but now you have a chip that's a generation behind in power use and performance. And A770 is at a performance level where 10-20% difference in performance starts impacting price by 30-40%.

The alternative would be their own node. But yes there is a tradeoff involved.

Edit: I don't see why anyone would buy this over the 6600 or the 6600 XT.

Of course it is. Instead of tackling all the real issues, they take the time to optimize for a game no one plays anymore. But that is of course, the darling of reviewers benchmark suites. This traveling medicine show is a joke that stopped being funny months ago. And we STILL don't have the cards. The latest pitch is probably "Just in time for the Holidays, kids!"

These seem so bunched up. Three cards within a $60 spread?

I know they are trying to make money but either axe the A770 8GB or bring the A750 8GB down $20-$30.

(Edit - it appears the A770 16GB is going to be a very limited release part, at least at the jump. So I guess $40 separating the full part vs a slightly cut down part makes sense, and they cant afford to really charge that much more for their “halo” card. It would still make more sense to me if the A770 was just 16GB and the price difference was $60 but no one is asking me, clearly.)

If the A750 was priced to beat the 6600 I would try it, I have an ARC compatible rig with a 6500XT in it right now that might benefit from it. We can hate on the 6500XT value prop but I got it cheap and it works for everything, not just DX12.

The A370 != A770, and there have been more than 20 driver releases between launches.

Intel is a pure value play right now, I dealt with dodgy AMD drivers for years (years ago…) in pursuit of value. But that value has to exist for that to work!

Right now Intel is acting as if AMD and the 3060ti, which could drop in price any time(my mouth to nvidias ears!) and really spoil it. It would *not* be the first time Nvidia decided to rain on someone’s parade and they have the supply chain to do it. All of the Intel slide decks are aiming for this one point in time that exists right now and is probably changing.

Intel needs to compare their A750/A770 against AMD and their 6600XT (or now 6650XT) rather than Nvidias stupidly overpriced 3060. Price/performance is just misleading in that regard.

Still all seems too expensive even ignoring performance in games they haven't (and won't) optimise for.

Plus perf/watt and perf/transistor still seems poor. About the only metric they win is cheapest 16GB card!
