Today, news came in that Ken Addison joins Ryan Shrout from PC Perspective to Intel. As this is the latest notable hire in a series of high-profile hires, I thought it would be interesting to list them up.

(VP = Vice President)

Intel hires overview

Brian Krzanich was quite a polarizing CEO, with many in the tech community not very fond of him. One culture change, however, that he did start was to hire more from the outside, instead of promoting people from within (the culmination of which could be Murthy becoming CEO). Here’s an overview of the most notable external hires that Intel made since BK became CEO.

Executive Leadership

In 2014, Amir Faintuch became SVP of the Platform Engineering Group. Among other things he introduced the multi-wave strategy to bring more improvements within nodes. Before, he was president at Qualcomm Atheros.

In November 2015, Murthy (Dr. Venkata (Murthy) Renduchintala), co-president of the mobile chips division, left Qualcomm for Intel. He was appointed president of the newly created Client and Internet of Things (IoT) Businesses and Systems Architecture Group (CISA), in which he oversees the Platform Engineering Group (PEG), Client Computing Group (CCG), Software and Services Group, the Internet of Things Group (IoTG) and Design Tools and Technology Group. Basically, he makes sure the engineering in the company is aligned to its products and manufacturing: he is responsible for silicon engineering, platform development and software enabling. Intel: “The CISA umbrella division is responsible for aligning technology, engineering, product design and business direction across the client device and IoT segments.”

In December 2015, Dan McNamara became SVP of the Programmable Solutions Group (PSG), formed from the acquired Altera.

In January 2016, Intel hired Tom Lantzsch from ARM (executive vice president of strategy) to become SVP of the Internet of Things Group (IoTG). His predecessor, Doug Davis, became the leader of the new Automated Driving Group (ADG), which was later subsumed in Mobileye.

Next, the search for a new CFO to succeed Stacy Smith, resulted in Bob Swan, in October 2016. Among other things, he was CFO of eBay.

In March 2017, Cormac Conroy became VP of the Communication and Devices Group, succeeding Aicha Evans who became Chief Strategy Officer. He was more than a decade at Qualcomm, lastly as VP of product management.

Also in March 2017, Intel aligned its AI strategy under the new Artificial Intelligence Products Group (AIPG), of which Naveen Rao (from the in August 2016 acquired Nervana) became VP.

In April 2017, Murthy was promoted to Group President of CISA and also appointed Chief Engineering Officer.

In August 2017, prof Amnon Shashua joined Intel from the Mobileye acquisition, becoming CEO and remaining CTO of that company.

The most prolific and high-profile hire since Murthy is undoubtedly Raja Koduri from AMD. He became SVP of the newly created Core and Visual Computing Group. He was SVP and chief architect of RTG at AMD and also had a four year stint at Apple.

In early 2018, CISA together with the Technology and Manufacturing Group was reorganized to the Technology, Systems Architecture & Client Group (TSCG). In other words, Murthy also became directly responsible for the Technology and Manufacturing Group.

In April 2018, Jim Keller became SVP of TSCG. Previously, he was at Tesla, AMD and Apple.

Lastly, in June 2018, Bob Swan became interim-CEO after BK’s resignation. Also, Window Snyder became chief software security officer, from cybersecurity roles at various high-profile companies.

All in all, Intel’s executive leadership consists of 27 names, 10 of which are outside hires from during BK’s role as CEO of Intel.
