I have a I7 4790K and a Gigabyte Z97 Gaming GT. I also have 2x GTX 980 in SLI. I pre-ordered the new Intel 750 PCIe NVMe SSD. I looked up my CPU and it only has 16 lanes. My motherboard supports 4x x16 slots running at 8x mode. I was reaching how the motherboard gets the extra lanes and it uses the PLX PEX8747 chip to either add or move lanes around when needed but I'm not exactly sure how it works. A couple of reviews online about the Intel 750 PCIe NVMe SSD states it that performs at peak performance if it directly uses the CPU PCIe lanes. Could some verify if this is true? Also, is there a way to set a PCIe slot to specifically use the CPU PCIe lanes? If I install my GPUs and PCIe SSD my motherboard will be configured to run at 8/8/8/8. The PCIe NVMe SSD only requires only 4 PCIe lanes but I don't have any x4 slots so I will have to plug it into a x16 slots. Would I be OK with setup or should be looking at investing in a x99 setup which their CPUs provide more lanes? I really like my setup now and don't really want to invest in a new CPU, motherboard and RAM. Is there's only a marginal speed difference with the PCIe NVMe SSD if it does use the PLX chip or will it be significant? I hope this all make sense and please be ask if you need more info from me.
