A very interesting point! But I don't think the situation can be analagous to a housewife who might be drawn to a store featuring 30 cents off 'Swiffer refills', who will then complete the rest of her shopping list 'just because she's already there'.
A person who haunts a 'Deals' forum tends to selectively strike on particular deals; I don't think anyone in for a half-price QuadCore is sticking around to buy matching (over-priced?) motherboard and ram 'just because he's already there'.
I'd be very interested to hear from a retail insider or someone in the know: how CAN a B&M sell consumer goods at these punishing discounts? Wouldn't the rest of their wares have to be marked up to compensate for the 'loss leader'?

mb's i saw at MC were competitively priced, a couple dollars more than online vendors.
that's very reasonable for a B&M imo.

Yes, Microcenter's everyday prices are typically higher as compared to Online, but they often run specials on motherboards, RAM, and Video cards alongside the "loss leader" items.
A good example is when I picked up my $199.99 Core i7 on their previous April 1st sale, and I ended up with an ASUS P6T motherboard too since it was on sale for $229.99. I could've gotten it for about $40 cheaper Online, but they gave me a great deal on the CPU and being able to exchange a defective board (if I would've had a problem...the board I bought was thankfully rock solid) at the store was worth the price premium, and most of the price premium was tied up in paying tax on the purchase). If I had needed a good video card (already had a 4870 1GB card), they had Core 216 eVGA GTX 260s for a great price too that day. That $200 deal on the CPU can easily become $500-$600 (or more) in sales.

I wish they would open a store near me (Charlotte). Great deals for those who live close by - pure frustration for those of us who do not.
