Intel and AMD make semiconductors to make money... If they thought there was a decent market for a 20w cpu, they'd make more. But the fact of the matter is that they both can't make enough high end cpu's to meet demand.

And as with any successful business, they are going to go where the demand is.

Intel can buy whatever threatens their welfare if it doesn't already make something better. They have a niche market in x86 processors, and they do their niche well. Unfortunately their design base is headed for the far shore. Makes me nervous that Intel will sell out to globalism and our stateside designers will be mostly out of work in but a few years.

AMD and Intel both needs to rethink their ways. I think it's about stupid for cpus to suck that much dang energy and throw it at really nothing. Some of you will argue that it's good for games ect... but that's crazy no games really needs that what needs to improve for games is the software, the coders that makes the games, the gpu, vpu, wutever you wish to call them. Heck even thoes are becoming crazy now days with the power they need just so you can have few fps more. To be honest VIA is doing it all right. Their new cpus might not be power house but they dang won't cook ya your steaks. Their new gpu chip looks dang nice too. It maybe not the best out there but what it eats up a few watts? Guess it's not just AMD and Intel thoe huh. I hear that IBM is got a hot chip too with that PPC 970. I must say thoe my older Duron 800 mhz with a small heatsink and a 2000 rpm fan only get's as hot as 80F.
So.... You're saying that an 800mhz Duron or a Via C1 is sufficient to run all of the latest software?

when you have to start considering your electric bill/performance gained, yes

well, maybe not those per se, but other designs

Dang!

*EDIT* Seriously though, there needs to be a more definate line drawn between performance computers, and computers for your grandma to check her e-mail with and shop on HSN.com.

There are certainly people here who are more qualified to comment on the design and manufacturing of MPU's but it seems to me that Intel must be pretty confident that their manufacturing process will be able to take advantage of such a deep pipeline. Ramping up the frequency definitely makes the marketing easier but how that impacts current draw/overall wattage as we start to push 4Ghz is anyone's guess? I am actually surprised that Intel would chose this route over something like an integrated memory controller, dual-core, or any other improvement that might not require such a direct increase in frequency to take advantage of. I'm eager to see what the final processor will look like though.

That's like saying by speed, Intel is obviously ahead iof the game. Those are two ways to tackle the problem.

Edit: I agree with what you say. It struck a chord in me, though...

Maybe the time hasn't came yet for Intel to pull the perverbial rabbit out of its hat yet. I mean, what market share has AMD really absorbed from Intel? As far as I can see its been Intel encroaching on traditional HP, SUN, MIPS, etc. territory. AMD has always been a supplement to the x86 market, living off scraps but really not hurting one bit. So AMD steals a few high end deals with their FX-53 processors, most people still seem to buy Dell. No Dell machine has an AMD cpu in it, right?
