Intel is Already Sampling Prescott Processors! 3.80GHz CPUs by Year End?

We managed to dig that Intel is already sampling its Prescott processor these days. The chips are not yet final, but in the second quarter Intel will already start to send its new 90nm CPUs to the partners. Since the chips that are sent to design partners should be made on more or less mature fabrication process, the information fully corresponds to the fact that the 90nm manufacturing technology is to be finalised by the middle of the year (see this news-story).

i thought that they were planning a 3.6GHz cpu by year end?
anyways i expected 3.6GHz to 4GHz, depending on how good hammer is

Is it me or does it seem some years the Ghz race slows down a LOT while others we just blaze by.

Crazyness....will be an interesting year.

Its not just you, it coincides with new fab processes. Each die shrink yields faster clocks, once they get the new parts up and running, they scale 'em til they can't scale anymore, then back to the drawing board.

The last Intel roadmap I saw had the Northwood's going to 3.6 at the end of the year, but Intel is slowing down considerably from what they've been doing. Need to give Prescott time and the Northwood is reaching the end of its scalable life.

3.8GHz is more than double my current clock speed. Makes me want to upgrade at years end.

Intel is always a bit conservative on their roadmaps. At first they had roadmaps with 3.06 GHz at the beginning of 2003 and 3.2 GHz at the end of 2003. Obiously unless something really major happened, Intel could scale more than .14 GHz in a full year. But that got stuck in everyone's minds that Intel will be sitting on thier hands for the year. Over the last 4 months or so that 3.2 GHz at the end of 2003 prediction has steadilly risen.

The higher the numbers, the more woowie the numbers look given the same % gain in Mhz.

these will not be pin compatible with S478 will they?
Well, last I understand, Yes Prescott would still be S478, but they would feature HT and a 800fsb. Now, also last I heard, Intel would be rolling out in 1H'03 Northwood's with HT and 800fsb at very low clockspeeds (like down to 2.2) and naturally, there would be mobo's that support 800fsb. The 800fsb is the only thing AFAIK that could keep one from popping a Prescott into a 533fsb HT capable chipset.

Btw off topic, whats the latest dates for Hammer release? End of March, early april?

What happened to all those rumors that Intel couldn't produce chips faster than 3 GHz with 478 pins?

Opteron's release is April 22, and the Athlon 64 release is mid September (same link).

What happened to all those rumors that windows XP couldn't run on P4s at higher frequencies than 2.8ghz?

Will current 845PE & E7205 motherboards support the Prescott as long as they can supply the needed 800MHz FSB?
It looks like all the latest "Intel" Socket 478 chipsets support hyper-threading, even SIS. I don't know about VIA's offerings.
