I bet a 2600K @ 5Ghz sucks more than power than Core i7 920 @ 4.2Ghz. I don't know that for sure though.

I think Bloomfield would still pull more total watts at its max overclock it is a 130Watt chip after all and 1155 SB is not.

I agree for anyone on a gulftown and bloomfield rig Ivy should be the minimal upgrade or Haswell. I'm totally skipping SB not a big enough increase in performance to do a complete rebuild for me.

So, will anyone be buying Ivy Bridge on the day it's released? Or will you wait for any problems to surface and be resolved first (such as the issues found with the Sandy Bridge 6-series chipsets)? If, so how long do you intend to wait?

Since I promised myself I'll upgrade when Ivy Bridge comes out (currently rocking an Athlon II 630) I'll most likely purchase Ivy Bridge shortly after release. It doesn't hurt that I have a Microcenter nearby.

I doubt I'll purchase it release day, more like when I have some free time, but I reckon that'll be within a few weeks of release.

I'm sure a number of the people on these boards will be purchasing it on day one. Or at least within the week.

I would definitely be getting it as soon as it hits shelves and I don't see why I shouldn't. Intel handled that situation pretty well and quick, not quite what I expected considering that Intel could take their sweet time fixing the problem as AMD did not even pose a threat.

The problem was not that bad and I have a friend who is still using the original motherboard without the B3 revision and still kicking strong, I did the switch to the unaffected ports and no problems yet. I might have a different opinion though had Intel turn a blind eye and completely ignored the problem.

Anyone have an idea when IB laptops will be available?

I am thinking of buying a Llano laptop, but am unimpressed with the CPU clocks. Might wait to see how IB stacks up against Llano GPU wise. For sure it will have better CPU performance.

Yeah, me too probably. The thing is though that I'll likely be upgrading 4 computers to Ivy Bridge (desktop, HTPC, notebook/ultrabook and a server), so I really don't want to be stuck with some early construction/manufacturing problem affecting them. Problems can occur with the new motherboards, graphics cards, and so on as well so I usually wait a couple of months after new hardware is released before buying.

I was really hoping IB should be available at CES in January as usual, but unfortunately I'll have to wait 3 more months. Don't think I can hold on much longer after that though... :sneaky:

The thing is that not all of these products would come out at the exact same time and although the 8th April time frame is known, it may well only be the launch of some IB processors. Motherboard manufacturers might not even produce a suitable mITX or mATX motherboard for your HTPC at launch.

Ideally I would prefer to wait till the bugs are ironed out but I'm in a dire need for a proper rig since a long long wait since Thuban and back then I got news about Bulldozer. Fast forward about a year later, BD is a Titanic and it is too late to even consider SB. 3 months is nothing compared to a year's worth of anticipation.

Keep in mind that IVB is going to be more like penryn to conroe than nehalem to penryn. 5-7% faster clock/clock, and another 5-10% higher clocks is all you'll get over SB.

Focusing on power saving makes sense from a marketing POV. The mobile market is the money market and being able to advertise extra battery life is a lot more valuable than an extra 10% performance, which the Average Joe doesn't really care about.

I think IB are going to be great for laptops. Meh for desktops.

I would love to get one ASAP just to put it through its paces as I did with my 2600K. Will be tough to justify getting rid of my perfectly good 2600K though...so chances are slim that I'll get the OK to make that newegg purchase

Planning to strategically dump my 3930K before IB-E launches and get one of those late next year. Will watch the massive overclocks from the sidelines like I did with my Nehalem until I got my SB-E. :|

If it's truly impressive and these claimed 6GhZ air overclocks are true I may sell my current MB and CPU and just buy into the platform and make a small profit on top.

I will be buying one once the 600 series nvidia GPUs are out as I am very kindly giving my current setup to the missus and building a new rig. No idea if I will use the 600 series GPU btw I will just wait to see how they compare to the 7000 series on price/performance.

Yeah, I know. But I'll also get lower power consumption, ability to use low power DDR3L RAM, USB3 integrated in the chipset, and a faster IGP which also supports 4K resolution. For the Notebook, HTPC and Server (which is on 24/7) the lower power consumption is really important. For the HTPC, I'm also hoping the 23.976 Hz video output issue has been fixed in IB, but that remains to be seen. And my desktop PC is due for an upgrade anyway, since the current one is based on a Core2Duo CPU.

I thought it was the lady of the house.

Well my closest of friends would have you believe that I am the lady of the house But I strongly contest those accusations every time they are leveled at me. It only hurts when my mom agrees with them

Seriously though, I can't rely on my wife to set ANY boundaries when it comes to hardware purchases. That's what gets me in trouble with myself at times, QX6700+vaporphase, then my 5+ Q6600 rigs, etc.

So, no, she's not the one to be putting any limits there. But the kids definitely put a damper on the enthusiast hobby because there is a limited budget and they'd rather we went back to Disney World next year rather than Daddy having sanding down one more CPU till all hours of the morning

No kids here, yet, but I can see where you are coming from. My GF always goes the "if it makes you happy, go for it." Another reason why I love her.

So I try to self moderate and end up spending more than I wanted and then trying to justify the purchase by finding some minute niche use. Haha.

"We" agreed (more like me, and I use her as the scapegoat) to a 2 year cycle.

IVB Here I come!

I know Intel has absolutely no competition and no reason to make these fast, but it really would be nice if they starting both cranking up the speed and price of the incoming CPU's. And by speed, I dont necessarily mean clock speed, but just architecturally speaking, make these faster. If someone has a i7 920 @ 4 GHz, switching to IB, for a whole new Motherboard, CPU, and possibly RAM set is quite a costly propostion for what is really a rather small performance increase.

I'm in that same boat right now. I have an i7 930 at a measely 3.6ghz (can do more, just haven't had need to.)

So, I was thinking like you - just upgrade my GPU and call it a day. So the money I set aside for upgrading I was going to use to upgrade the GF's problem-ridden PC. Then I realized I'd be buying a new Mobo+CPU. So I put on my grinch hat and stole the idea to just buy myself parts and give her my old parts

She'll go from a Phenom II X3 720 (unlocked 4th, but unstable) to a Intel i7 930.

Win-win!
