Well it should perform like 4C/8T skylake at ~3Ghz in MT workloads. For ST, it will be slow but usable. Battery life should be good tho.

If two channels can feed 8+8 or 8+16, then one can certainly feed 0+8.

Dedicated die but it wouldn't surprise me if they were doing both.

The issue is the Single Channel... in laptops they should use dGPU to compensate the low GPU performance.

I don't think anyone would bother pairing a dGPU with ADL-N. It even lacks anything beyond a few chipset PCIe 3.0 lanes.

No. Even masochists know better than to spend $500 on this unit. It's not the CPU, but the rest of the package, considering the price. One can buy considerably better hardware at this price point.

The Chromebook i3 has double the GPU execution units, and a true masochist will have Windows (or Linux) running on it in short order. The alternative from AMD is also better and can run very low power, I personally played Diablo 3 one evening on a 5600U with 12W TDP set via Lenovo's management app.

Reminds me a lot of netbooks when they first launched. Perhaps this will be usable, but I had a buddy that bought some $500 "laptop" back in the day and it struggled with life. Part of that was probably the Via CPU (not that Intel Atom was all that great) and trying to run Windows on it, but the hardware was all around awful.

I bought an original iPad around that same time and even though it was using Apple's first foray into custom silicon, the end experience was far better for the similar overall hardware specs.

Apple is still selling older generation iPads for around $350. I haven't ever tried using them with their keyboard attachments, but it probably not any worse than the low-end laptops being shoved out into the market. I wanted to compare the hardware to that iPad, but when I clicked on the link their store has it discounted to $350. This is clearly the Fallout 76 of craptops. Even still I'm not tempted to pull the trigger.

Reminds me a lot of netbooks when they first launched.

I bought one for my mom, /w Atom CPU. Cuteness factor 11, usability... complicated.

I would still need to see how Gracemon behaves in this configuration, for example how responsive the iGPU is during browser page rendering, but I'm sure the compute power of the 8-core is good enough for a nice Windows experience. The most annoying thing about underpowered Win machine is the freeze that happens when the OS throws everything at it during login or during updates. The 8-core won't have problems with that, the 4-core will probably be acceptable.

Anyway, the first step is getting the price in the right direction, and as @rUmX mentioned the price just "dropped" to $350 for the Acer machine. I'm pretty sure this isn't a true discount and more likely the real price target for such a product. Now all we need to do is wait for @igor_kavinski to buy one!
