Intel or AMD for overclocking?

I'm trying to decide if I should get a Barton 2500+ and overclock to 3200+ or a P4 2.4C and overclock to 3.1ghz or so.

From what I've read with the Bartons hit 3200+ pretty easily with minor cooling. I haven't heard much about what the norm for P4 2.4Cs is.

Both would use the same memory (Winbond CH5 memory sticks). Motherboard wise I was going to go with the Abit IC7-G (Intel) and the Asus A7N8X Deluxe (AMD). Any better boards for overclocking? Will either have any upgradability in the future? I.E. Prescott and Athlon64.

I mostly play games, with some minor encoding on the side. I use Win2K however, which means I won't be using HT if I got the 2.4C.
I would probably keep this system until the end of the year (Possibly a little longer). I have a 9800 Pro already.

The AMD machine would cost about 200$ less than the Intel. ($95 for proc, 115 for motherboard vs 175+220)

What do you guys think? Which did you choose and why? I'm tired of my KT266A and 1900+

if i had the money, i would get the 2.4C because it can prolly go higher than 3.1 (Quackmaster got his to go 3.42)
and even at 3.1 it's faster than a 2500+ oced to 3200+. if your on a budget, go with the 2500+. as for mobo's, i think the IC7-G is the right choice for an intel setup. For AMD, i personally would got with the NF7-s but the A7N8X is also a great choice

I've got a 2.4c at 3.4GHz with the stock cooler.

I also wrote a couple of posts about this EXACT topic located here and another useful one here

Frankly, although Intels clock higher from a purely GHz standpoint, performance-wise the AMDs are still very close when OC'd

Not to mention the much, much greater price/performance ratio for AMD!

Intel if you can afford it, the high FSB just dominates.

Yes you pay more for intel up front but you can also sell it for more after you're done.

Resale value for intel is better so I dont see intel as being that much more expensive in the end.

I never worry about resale value - future possiblities can not be given much weight at purchase time. But the Intel chips are much better at video type processing, so if you are doing much of that, it's worth the extra bux. For anthing else I'll stay with AMD. They've done me right at a better price for years.

Thanks for the replies so far. Is the Canterwood really that buggy? I was leaning towards the P4, but I don't really want to spend hours troubleshooting stuff

What about cooling? Can the AMD get by with a good heatsink and a quiet fan like the Intel can?

I dunno about the cooling, but AMD is really great for their price/performance ratio, but I would personally go with the P4 2.4C and hope for the best. I'm actually an AMD kind of guy (being that I've purchased about 5 processors in the past 3-4 months??), but it's nice to mix things up every once in a while.

EDIT: actually I do know that AMD's fans are a little on the high pitched side. But whatever floats your boat...

I gave in and bought a 2.4C with an Abit IC7-G and 1gb of TwinMos CH5 memory. $600 total I'd be happy with 3ghz, since I was planning on getting a 3.0c anyway. This way I saved a good chunk of cash

resale value on a computer? Are you kidding me..? That's like trying to make a money off of buying gasoline and storing it in a huge tank at your home (farmers do this sometimes since they need the gas for their tractors etc). The profit only comes if you have a buyer, otherwise who gives a poop about resale value?

Bah says me. I've got two Intel boxes and could care less about resale $$. THAT issue is altogether different and can be argued either way. I've got a good friend who is constantly selling his own computer (about 3 or 4 times a year) for nearly what he paid for it (sometimes EXACTLY what he paid for it). He and I agree that most people (non-geeks/technophiles) care more about service. If you'll come set it up in their home so it works... most people like that far more than giving a crap about what cpu/mobo combo they just bought.

Admitedly, my buddy owns a computer service and does this for a living, but still, he has had several Intel boxes, too. AMD.. Intel...
