ok, im seeing that the new barton 3200+ only operates at 2.2 GHZ while the intel 3.2GHZ operates at 3.2GHZ (i assume both are able to overclock). would it be better to just go with intel?

IMO i wouldnt go with a barton unless it was a 2500+ model (Cheap and good at overclocking)... Bartons are basically done from what i can see. The new 64bit processors are AMDs new processors.. So either go with AMDs 64bit or intel

No, it won't.
Athlon XP 'Bartons' are good for cheapies.
Athlon64 'Newcastles' are good all around (slightly lesser than the 1MB cache ones). Currently only available in the A64 3000+.
Motherboards with the socket 754 (VIA KT800, NVidia NForce3, SiS 755, AMD 8151) support the Athlon64. Socket 462 is fo the Athlon and Athlon XP.

The Intel 3.2 might be able to to make it to 3.6GHz w/o much work, and the Athlon XP to 2.4GHz. Both would give similar performance (you can argue the fine points all day long, but overall, they even out). At stock speeds, the P4 is a good bit better (the PR rating would be about even for a 533MHz FSB 3.2GHz P4B, but the 800MHz FSB P4C does much better).

That depends: what do you need it for, and how much iomportant the cost vs. performance?

While I can't recommend an Athlon XP over the 2800+, the A64 3000+ would be a better bet for gaming (it's right near the P4 3.2GHz in gaming), the P4 if you want to do a lot of bandwidth-heavy tasks at once.

If it's just going to be a web/office PC with the occasional media encoding and game, I'd go with an Athlon XP 2500+ or 2600+ (overclock if you want...or not). This will be a nicely priced PC able to cope with anything for the next year or two, not quite on par with the P4C 2.4Ghz in gaming, but about that overall (2500+ PR ratings largely based on the P4B 2.53GHz). If you're not sure, this is a good bet, as it will also save you a bit of wallet thickness comapred with other, newer options. If you go with this, yes, the Abit NF7 and NF7-S are great boards.

If gaming is most important, Athlon 64 3000+ w/ a VIA board or the ECS 755A2 (not A, but A2). If heavy multitasking is your thing, a P4 with HT.
/me leaves bredcrumb trail for Duvie.

Yeah, it just came out. If you expect to order in the next day or two, you probably won't find it. It will probably be out there within a week, I imagine.
If you don't want to wait,
GIGABYTE K8T800 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket 754 CPU, Model "GA-K8VT800M" -RETAIL
should be a safe bet as well, only $96

Is there actually nforce3 boards that works with the normal socket 754 athlon64s? I've looked and all I could find were socket 940 ones.
