Intel Pentium G620 2.6Ghz or i3-2100 3.1Ghz?

My wifes PC has died. It had a pretty decent CPU in it, an AMD Althlon x2 7750 2.7GHz BE. Ran hot as hell but performed ok. She just used the integrated nvidia graphics on the mobo.

I'm thinking about just overhauling the entire thing and I'm wondering which of the two cpu's in my subject title would be a better fit. All she does is just browse the net and use MS Office (just word, outlook, and basic excel).

I'm leaning towards the budget Pentium...what do you guys think? Is there a better alternative from AMD?

I'm pretty sure that a PC would not just 'die' for no reason. Replacing a few components that are affected would usually make it work again unless everything fried.

Go with the Pentium G620 if you insist on changing anyways. The Core i3 2100 compared to the Pentium G620 costs way too much for simple tasks.

When I look at socket 1155, I see no reason for the G620. Either I would cough up the money for the i3, or just get a G530 Celeron. Basically all a G620 is buying you is a higher clock speed, same setup. Hell, you could look into a single-core G460.

But, that's just me.

I used the G530 for 2 months, I played pc games on it (MW3, Fallout) it is more then enough for those basic tasks and it costs $20 cheaper then the G620

The integrated graphics is fried. Replacing it would entail replacing the entire board and probably my older DDR 2 ram. I guess I could use discrete graphics but I hate to have faulty hardware.

As for the CPU...I think the G620 is right for her. Although I didn't even know the 530 existed. Hmmm.

G530s are 2.4 Ghz, dual-core, have HD gfx and EIST.

Go to Intel's Ark site and you can compare the G620 with the G530 side by side. You will see the only difference is the 2.6 clock speed and 3MB cache. The G620 is 8% faster for $20 more.

I've build 2 budget systems with Celeron G530s,4gb RAM,SSD and i assure you thats one heck of a processor for the price paired with an cheap h61 motherboard.

Guess I'm somewhat jaded, having had access to several Micro Centers over the last 15 years, but I just built a budget system for someone using the G620. It was only $50, $10 more than the G530, and I figured it was cheap enough. The system will never be OC'd, and the $10 penalty was worth the minute extra speed and the extra 1MB cache.

The i3 wasn't even in consideration with it being $50 more than the G620.

Also recommend the Celeron. I have the G540 and to tell you the truth, theres no noticeable difference in basic tasks when compared to my overclocked 2600k setup. I do have an SSD in it though which helps.

I have an SSD on my G530 and I can confirm that it feels just as fast as my 2500k. Boot time is even similar too. I have not noticed any slow downs with this CPU yet either. Intel single threaded performance is just amazing.

Can you pull your graphics card and test her system? If the only faulty hardware is onboard graphics the difference between even a cheap new build vs. a cheap graphics card is a few hundred $$$.

Don't get me wrong, I think everybody's advice is good if a new system is what you want, just not convinced it's what you need.

I have a G620 and for the price, it can't be beat. Its faster than almost any Core 2 Duo which is amazing for a $65 chip. It even powers all of my games on High/Ultra with a 465 (at 1366x768)

I think that the Intel® Pentium® G620 is your best bet for a processor for her. Matched up with a H61 or H67 chipset based board and you should have a nice system for her to work with.

OP if you are going to get an SB Pentium over the i3 I would suggest putting the extra money into a cheap ivy-ready mobo for a proper platform you can upgrade later slowly (i.e., after selling the old components).

The G620 is about equal to a E8500
The G530 is about equal to a E7500

Either cpu will be more then enough for what you want to do with that machine

How does BF3 run on that?

To be honest I haven't played BF3 yet. (on this rig) I've been playing MW3, Dead Island and Dirt 3 on the PC. It has no problems maxing all of these out @ 768p which is amazing. I paid $75 for the GTX 465 and $110 for the MSI H61 and G620 Combo from NCIX on sale.

I will pick up BF3 soon and let you know. I know the 64man online games should make a dual core chug, but I expect I could still play at Medium or better settings.
