I figure that Intel is already taking care of the big OEMs, which is why the supply of RMA chips suddenly went away.

That, and I figure they are holding back on sending any more chips into the sales channel until the microcode fix can be incorporated.

Funny, though, that Intel isn't saying anything about how testing on said microcode update is going. If it looked like it was going to work in testing, I think we'd have started hearing some strategic "leaks" about it by now.

The real problem is that we have a failed CPU manufacturer.
Exactly. And here today is what I suspected. Everybody is using the failed whats at the old bad settings against Zen 5.

I'm surprised too that they took Intel's word and included the Raptors in the benchmarks. There is no guarantee that the microcode will ever come out. Intel could come out with an announcement on 31st Aug saying that they have discontinued the entire Raptor Lake Refresh line of CPUs and from that point onwards, they provide random RMA replacements to whoever is lucky for the next two years and that's that.

The Verge asked 14 prebuilt makers if they would extend the warranty on raptor lake PCs. Dell used the same douche canoe language their sugar daddy Intel uses. My BS translator says that when they diagnose your PC the CPU won't be the issue.

Excellent response from many, and Pudget is notably not among best. HP is the only one of the big 3 that firmly stepped up.

THe issue? small ones are not safe and might switch to AMD to be safe.

Puget says its Intel CPU failure rate is lower than AMD Ryzen failures.....Puget claims AMD Ryzen 5000 and 7000 chips have a higher failure rate than Intel 13th- and 14th-gen processors, so far...High-end PC builder Puget Systems released records showing that its current failure rate of 13th- and 14th-generation Intel processors is a little over 2%, while systems it has shipped with AMD Ryzen 5000 and 7000 chips have a little over 4% failure rate. https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-com...e-rate-data-cites-conservative-power-settings

Jay testing new microcode

Largest drop seem to happen in 3dmark timespy

Small drop in cyberpunk which leads to the 14700k being faster than the 14900k after microcode update

Overall it seems like the performance is less affected then feared

Jay testing new microcode

It looked fine (<1%) until Timespy. -700 pts on Timespy (11941 pre --> 11264 post 0x129, -5.7%) is pretty significant as it's closer to gaming workloads.

Actual impact in the few games he tested (that weren't engine-limited) were smaller:
-2.9% in Cyberpunk FPS

TBD if it prevents unscheduled ring bus disassembly or not.

From reading around, for some with a degraded i7 the RMA process is going smoothly. Seems like i9s are backed the hell up, with some complaining it's been 2 weeks or more with no response.

It's reddit posts so grain of salt; a few in IT say they get 2 AMD tickets in 6 months, but are now getting 30-40 tickets in a day for raptor lake. One said they are swapping out 250 desktops for AMD, and a couple of contacts in other offices are in the same process. If true, those are lost sales it will be hard to win back.

"You get a 5yr warranty! And besides, they fixed it now." incoming.

No discussion about Intel's microcode update and associated statement yet? My takeaways
  1. The patch requires a bios update.
  2. The microcode limits the voltage to 1.55V. As far as I can tell, this is the only change.
  3. Intel says the cause of the degradation is voltage.
  4. No performance loss except in rare edge cases.
  5. More updates coming by end of August

It is unclear how much this reduces the degradation, and given Intel's track record with this fiasco, I'm assuming the worst until proven otherwise by reputable third party outlets.
