But that's just FP performance and the K8 architecture has always done very well in that area. Even the X2s right now are much faster than Conroes at FP. It doesn't mean it's faster in overall performance.
No it isn't. Not per CPU, not per clock. Opterons are only faster than Core 2's because they have more memory bandwidth. In single/dual-threaded apps which aren't memory bandwidth constrained, Core 2's are faster.
The claimed 45% advantage for Penryn based Xeons are also in multi-processing server markets which Xeons are heavily bandwidth constrained. It's the reason going from Woodcrest to Clovertown only gives 30-40% despite double the amount of cores.
