I am looking for dual processor PIII mobo for a reliable server. Should I go with intel serverworks chipset (supermicro has some boards) or go with via chipsets.

will be running windows NT or 2000, reliability and compatability more important

for company

want to go economical way but not cheap way (cheap is always bad,you have to cut corners)

If you value your career, use Intel or Serverworks chipsets only. I would NEVER run a mission-critical machine on a VIA chipset. To save cash, try to find a nice Asus P2BD-x board, and populate it with 2 P-III 750's, and a LOT of RAM.

IMHO

Agreed. I wouldn't have any qualms about using the VIA chipset for workstations, but for a reliable server, I'm a bit shaky. Sure, my VIA board has been up for over two months no reboots, but still... its not as proven in server apps.

they can answer this question there in their forum... I perfer serverworks myself, BUT was too expensive so I got the via(home use) if it was for my company I would get the serverworks.

Acorp makes some pretty weird boards. I don't have one myself, so I don't know exactly what to think. Nice sunflower pic on the box My brother has one of these. Seems to run fine.

Acorp's been around awhile, but I still wouldn't use them for a server board. Tyan, SuperMicro, MSI, Asus, to name a few..

I would go with the server works based board. It is what is being used in Compaq, HP and other good quality PIII servers for a good reason!

Asus has one that has built-in UW160SCSI into it. It is not cheep, but they make excellent boards. Supermicro also does make good server boards.

Buy quality ECC RAM from crucial. Buy quality parts
Also look into a Good RAID card (Not adaptec). Software RAID is not the way to go.

I am a network engineer and consultant. I have cleaned up messes from proir people who did a piss pour job. Do not skimp on this stuff.

Down time is far more expensive then the hardware you skimped on!
