Dang, I've had Sandy Bridge for five freakin' years and it looks like it's finally at the point where the performance boost is enough to justify a rebuild upgrade. Definitely waiting for Intel to fix the teething problems with Skylake. Why do they keep cheaping out on stupid stuff? I might go with a six-core I7-5820K when the time comes unless a Skylake counterpart comes out. Still not in any rush, though. I have never had a build for this long, _ever_. Since I don't game (I'm an Adobe guy) I'm not as sensitive to frame rates and such. I don't think I've commented here for two years! Thanks to everyone for laying out the details here about the motherboard chipsets and such. Now I basically know what I want, and it's probably going to be the Z170 (or its successor) if I go with Skylake down the road. Cheers.

Skylake-E should be out in 1H 2017. If you can wait it out, it should be a beastly chip.

Well happy with my choice of a Skylake i3-6100 after help from this forum. Awesome at everything! When i put my heatsink on i was careful not to tighten too much though!

I feel the same way about my G4400 SKL Pentium chip. It's the most "snappy" CPU that I've yet used, it seems. I feel, subjectively, that the DDR4 makes a difference compared to Haswell rigs. (This seems to be borne out by the SKL versus HSW memory scaling gaming benchmarks, too.) And I haven't even overclocked it yet!

Push-pins... shouldn't give me any issues.

Glad you are enjoying your i3 6100! What does the rest of your system look like?

What's interesting is that the G4400 runs at 3.3GHz. Assuming ~10% uplift in performance/clock over Haswell, that's equivalent to a 3.63GHz Haswell. No wonder it is snappy!

Skylake Pentium and Core i3 review from russian website 3DNews:

Skylake inexpensive: a review of Core i3-6320, i3-6100 and Pentium G4500

Here we can see that Skylake Core i3 easily outclasses AMD APUs when it comes to CPU performance, even the Pentium does pretty well against the more expensive A8-7670K.

Actually the most interesting part are the gaming tests, especially in light of other recent thread. Let's see how HD 530 stacks up when paired with (more) up to date drivers and decent (yet not expensive) DDR4-2666:

Ouch, quite a bit different from this.

www.3dnews.ru/924775

Basically Skylake GT2 graphics provide slightly better performance than A6-7400K. While it's not as fast the more expensive APUs, it closed the gap quite a bit compared to Haswell while the CPU performance lead increased (especially Core i3s). A8-7600's integrated graphics are 25-40% faster than the similarly priced Pentium G4500 based on the tests above, but it's generally slower in CPU tasks and doesn't look like the best option to pair a dGPU with (more below).

Crazy to see how much battery life improved since SB/IB days.

Cute little computer! What's the noise like under load?

Not that far, just going to startup now and install Windows 10 Pro

However the startup with 100% fan, sounds like a laptop. But relatively quiet one. When its running you can barely hear a thing

Thanks!

I will try post some small benches and info as time allows it. Windows 10 is busy with the 1511 update currently.

Not joking or trolling...
Intel in fact has potential on the mobile world. I own an Asus Zenfone 2 and is amazing. The problem is that Android is not the OS suited for that beast.

Its Windows Mobile 10. However the problem of that OS is that their interface is not that keyboard friendly. So... why they don't make their return to the physical keyboard and a mini trackpad in order to make it a more professional oriented device? I would buy it since it will save me a lot of time compared to touchscreen ones. And also would be somehow gamer friendly. Since those physical keyboards can be configured as gaming controls. It would be awesome for Windows Mobile 10.

Now returning to the big iGPU part.
Definately Intel iGPU results for Iris 550 were far better than expected (near 940M levels which means GTX750 levels), so definately Iris Pro will put them into the GTX 750 Ti levels. That's insane and epic to watch. Even some casuals will start to doubt the use of dGPU with this new iGPU. Intel finally shown potential. If they want to dominate, they need to partner with some game companies and prepare their framework like Gameworks in order to defy nVIDIA in that. And deliver constant driver graphics like the rest of the group.
